The debuts of the global superstars set their players into their status – this is usually the case, though we've already seen with Mrs. Twain that this rule doesn't hold always. The same can be said about Madonna's eponymous platter, which sounds weird, because the record sold a lot more than that of Mrs. Twain. However, I would dare to suggest Madonna's not really her consequent self here. While you do notice her mercurial presence she morphed into her later transformations, the disc feels occasionally surprisingly apprehensive, which is a characteristic we don't connect with her. Moreover, the tunes here don't seem quite hers, she doesn't tackle them in the same way as she does on her best works. Then again, Madonna was her introductory LP, so we shouldn't be shocked over this.
