“If it did, I wouldn’t have brought you here,” Rose points out, patting him on the arm. There’s nothing in her eyes or her smile to belie the statement, not a drop of hesitance or worry. And, really, that’s no surprise considering this whole thing was her idea in the first place.

They’re still navigating the roles that they’ve stepped up and into since Bobby came to live with them, after that night less than a month ago when Rose called Ray and stumbled over a story so bizarre he felt like he was in a dream, about a rock band tragedy and the teenager left behind. It’s difficult to set hard and fast rules, when they still aren’t totally sure what they’re doing; to know when to push Bobby for answers and when to wait for him to come to them.

Or, 5 times Ray and Rose took care of Bobby and one time he took care of them.

Rose raises an eyebrow, perfectly in control of both herself and the situation. Ray wishes it wasn’t so damn attractive. “You like me,” she says matter-of-factly, not shying away from the truth that must be all over Ray’s face. “Don’t you?”

When he mumbles out a scratchy, “Y-Yeah,” Rose’s face lights up – not with mocking laughter like Ray expected, but with happiness and hope.

Her teeth sink into her bottom lip, trying to contain her smile. Her fingers drum eagerly on the tabletop. “I knew it! So, why haven’t you asked me out yet?”

The question is like a jolt of energy, a shock that puts him back in his body and corrects the irregular beat of his heart. For the first time since Rose held his hand in the rain, Ray’s tongue unties enough to form a full sentence, reminding her incredulously, “Because you have a boyfriend?”

Or: The beauty of letting all kinds of love coexist.
