“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” Dennis says, backing away with his hands out in front of him defensively. “PMS much?”

Mac and Charlie chortle with laughter, but Dee only rolls her eyes. “Oh please, like you guys aren’t just as bad. Maybe you have PMS.”

“Nah, that’s a woman thing. Us men have complete control over our emotions,” Mac boasts, puffing out his chest, and suddenly Dee knows exactly how she’s going to spend the rest of her day. The rest of the week, even, if she plays her cards right.

Before the line can even fully land, Dom grabs gruffly at Brian’s ankle and halts his movements with an iron grip. “Touch me with anything but your hand right now and I’m gonna flip you off of this couch.” Sighing, Brian relents for now, going boneless and vulnerable so Dom won’t feel the need to follow through on the threat. It’s not that he’s opposed to a little date night wrestling match – Brian will throw hands with anyone if he’s in the right mood – but Dom's twitches have morphed into all-out spasms and Brian doesn’t actually want to see him explode. Because he, like, loves him or whatever. “Fine,” he says, “we’ll think of something.” Or: 5 failed attempts at kink and 1 that might just work.

“I don’t think any of us were particularly subtle. If it makes you feel better, I’ll allow you to share the blame…but only half of it.” Then Obi-Wan shrugs. “Or a fourth of it, I suppose. Anakin doesn’t make a convincing slaver any more than Ahsoka makes a convincing slave.”

Rex snorts at that, more air than humor. “I suppose you’re right. Thank you, Sir.”

Obi-Wan ducks his head, overcome by the generosity of his friend. Some might say it takes a Jedi to feel compassion in the face of such adversity, but clearly it takes a clone as well.

As if to prove him right, Rex glances around to make sure they’re not being watched, then puts a hand on Obi-Wan’s wrist, one of the few places his skin hasn’t been torn open. “How are you feeling?”

Or: Sometimes it takes a clone.

Every time the healers go on about how lucky he is, Anakin wants to laugh. His threshold of despair has always been fairly high – growing up as a slave on the dust ball of Tatooine will do that to a person – but even he’s having a hard time finding the good fortune in being limbless and scarred.

“It’s a miracle that you survived,” Master Che tells him before nearly every treatment, her last farewell before she dunks him in a bacta tank for Force knows how long. “A weaker man wouldn’t have.”

“Your burns are healing nicely,” one of the assistants says when he’s pulled from the tank again and again, groggy and tingling. “We should be able to fit you for your prosthetics soon.”

Or: Anakin gets injured a few years early and it saves the galaxy.

The Force leaves no marks, but sometimes Obi-Wan still imagines he can see bruises around Padmé’s neck, blood brought to the surface by familiar fingertips. A trick of the light, perhaps, or the conjuring of his weary mind, desperate for any outward proof of their turmoil. Because if they’re this broken, this torn apart, the evidence should be written all over their skin, medals awarded to them for their survival.

But instead they’re here, alone together at the end of the world and mortally wounded with nothing to show for it.

Or: After Mustafar, Obi-Wan and Padmé disappear to a faraway planet and piece together some semblance of a life.

The first time a member of the Jedi Council referred to him as Master Kenobi, a pleased thrill had gone through Obi-Wan’s body, gratified after twelve long years of hard work and uncertainty. The circumstances are hardly what Obi-Wan would have chosen, but there’s no question that Knighthood is a welcome position to have gained.

Truthfully, Obi-Wan has spent the better part of his life feeling useless and small, so to be looked on with some measure of respect feels pretty damn good.

Obi-Wan’s new apprentice, he quickly learns, has a knack for turning things on their head, for breaking them down until they’re nothing but incongruous parts, and this is no exception. Because it’s barely two weeks before the words Master Kenobi have lost all meaning and Obi-Wan begins fantasizing about changing his name.

It’s just—it’s all he ever hears. Night and day, rain or shine, training or at rest, Anakin’s high-pitched little voice chatters about Master Kenobi this and Master Kenobi that and Did you see that speeder, Master Kenobi? How fast do you reckon it was going?

Or: Obi-Wan gets used to having a Padawan.

“Anakin, I know you’re upset…and you have every right to be,” Obi-Wan admits, calmly removing the accusatory finger from his face with a firm hand around Anakin’s wrist. Anakin’s hand is shaking – he doesn’t know when that started, but he can’t seem to make it stop. “Do you really think that I wanted Ahsoka to be expelled from the Order? For even a moment? Of course I didn’t, but my hands were tied.”

Intellectually, Anakin knows that – he’s seen enough sorrow and bloodshed and injustice to know how this works – but that’s not enough this time. In truth, it’s probably never been enough for him. Because, despite what the Code and his master tried so hard to teach him, knowing will never take precedence over feeling.

Or: Anakin isn't coping well.

Anakin is three years old the first time he feels someone die.

It’s a strange, terrifying feeling, something halfway between a dream and reality, an ache that’s almost physical but not quite. The room is dark when his eyes snap open, the last wisps of the vision dissipating into the night and phantom pain clinging to the very edges of his awareness. His chest feels hollow, like someone cut him open, scooped his heart out, and then replaced it with sharp, cold nothingness.

“Mama,” he croaks when his mouth remembers how to speak, painfully sitting up on his sleep mat. His mother is fast asleep only a few feet away, the dark circles under her eyes visible even in the dim, flickering light from the kerosene lamp. “Mama, something’s wrong.”

Being the Force's favorite child is, at times, a curse rather than a blessing.
