Mario headcanon: Bob-ombs

Bob-ombs are, to be general, bombs that walk, but can be purely mechanical or a mix of magic and explosive devices.

“Bob-omb” technically refers to multiple species and items, the concept of a walking bomb being considered highly desirable by tinkerers and magic-users over the centuries.

Some varieties created by magic developed the ability to reform or only combust their outermost shell, and from this longer existence gained sapience and somehow the ability to reproduce as the animated magic warped their structures over time until truly alive. Still others capable of reforming may have only animal or machine-like intellect and studiously patrol territory. There are multiple cases of Bob-ombs found still loyalty patrolling their routes assigned to them by a long dead master.

However the reformation magic of Bob-ombs can fail with age or poor health conditions. Health experts in the bob-omb community argue furiously on how often a bob-omb should explode for proper mental and physical health.

Sapient bob-ombs sometimes have a reputation of being easily swayed to the side of anyone who treats them as people and not merely machines, to the point of ignoring their own moral codes. However, if they feel betrayed and fooled on that matter rebellion can be swift as shown by the uprising in the Koopa Bros Fortress (Paper Mario 64)
