Finally some nap time after playtime.
Picture if you will... (Mercy Hog family headcanons)
Wilhelmina is very friendly and nice, but is picked on because she is a bit fluffier than most of the girls her age. Ben and Molly don’t like this, so Ben often is yanked off of them by teachers or by Rat and Sym’s kids, often with some sort of skin torn off his opponent, while Molly keeps her distance (she is much older than them, after all, she could get into serious trouble if she got into a physical fight with a bunch of kids, picking on her sister or not) so she settles for scaring them shitless with her powers. Bob the dog literally just pisses on them because if you’re going to treat his people like #2, he’ll give you #1 back. Mercy isn’t happy about how the three of them handle it, but she tells Roadhog in secret that she does like the fact that they stand up for one another.
Molly adopts a little orphaned boy that she finds while out on a mission, when she gets off the airship with the child in tow, Wilhelmina and Mercy immediately rushes over to shower the little one with love (Willi: he’s so cute! How old is he? What’s your favorite color, sweetie? Oh, you’re going to love it here, Aunt Willie promises!), concern (Mercy: he’s a bit underweight and I’m concerned about these scars, but with enough love and care he’ll be happy and healthy in no time!) and Oma and Auntie snuggles. Ben looks at the kid, looks at Molly and asks, “Seriously, who did this to you?” Molly gives him a flat look and says, “Fer th’ love of Christ, Ben, I didn’ push ‘im out, ‘m takin’ ‘im in.” Hog just gently pats the child’s head with a chuckle, “Welcome ta th’ family, kid. You’ll get used ta us soon enough, struth.” He promises as the dog gives the child a kiss on the cheek, making him laugh as he happily takes in his new family.
When Ben sees either of his sisters flirting or chatting with a member of the opposite sex, he watches from a distance, being the biggest of overprotective little brothers while their parents keep an observant eye on it, knowing that their daughters can take care of themselves but wanting to be there just in case. But when Ben flirts with his eventual girlfriend, his sisters and mother giggle relentlessly and take video of it with their phones while Roadhog just shakes his head at them. His family is so weird...
Mercy loves making her family classic meals from her home country that her mother used to make for her. She loves baking goodies with her babies and eventual grandbabies and giggles when they try to hand feed them to her, their father and each other. She loves munching on chocolates and scratching behind her dog’s ear while he’s curled up beside her on the couch while she’s watching a swiss rom com. But she friggin’ adores watching her man work the grill in the wacky apron she gave him for Christmas way back before they were dating. She finds it funny how tiny he makes their massive grill look in comparison and how he often hums while he works and how he always makes everything so tasty and filling and how the air smells so lovely when he’s working his magic.
When one of the kids has a nightmare, they go to the closest sibling in age to them, then they go to the final sibling, then the three of them and the dog sneak over to their parents’ room. Hog is usually the first to see them since he sleeps on the side of their massive bed closest to the door. He never asks what’s wrong. He knows exactly why they’re there and scoops all four of them up and rolls to the side to sandwich them all between him and Mercy where they know they are safe and sound. He smiles warmly as he watches as, one by one, the four littler Rutledges succumb to slumber before softly wishing them sweet dreams and going back to sleep.

Nightmares
Ben woke up sweating and shaking. Lightning flashing outside his window and thunder booming loudly, not that he could hear anything other than the rapid beating of his own panicked heart.
Clowns.
Why was it always clowns?
He glanced around his darkened bedroom, the five year old’s shaking hands reaching for the jar of mechanical fireflies his eldest sister had given to him so illuminate the frightening figures that occupied the corners of his room that had not been there when he had gone to sleep.
After opening the jar with a ‘pop’ and sending the metal insects loose in his room, he was able to establish that the scarily shaped shadows were just, ya know, his stuff. Sitting right where he left it. Okay, he seriously needed to calm down. He starting taking deep breaths as he focused on the soft glow of the fireflies’ lights as his grip on the jar lessened a bit.
It was just a dream. There was no need to be scared. There weren’t really any clowns nearby...
Right?
Another flash of lightning illuminated and the shadow of a fluffy round thing exploded on the wall beside him.
NOPE.
He flung his covers off and dashed for Wilhelmina’s room, holding the jar to his chest as he opened the door and ran inside.
Wilhelmina woke with a start as she felt as if she was falling.
And she wasn’t exactly wrong.
Someone had bounced on her bed, making her fly up and then down. And that someone was surrounded by fireflies while clawing at her blankets before crawling inside of them and curling up into a frightened ball beside her.
“Ben?” she squawked, “Is that you?”
The lump in her blankets wiggled, as if nodding.
“Did you have a nightmare?” she asked.
Another wiggle nod.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Ben rolled around in a wild fashion, thrashing beneath her covers.
“Oh come on, it can’t be that bad.” she assured him.
He poked his head out of her blankets and scowled at her, “Yes it is.”
“Prove it.” she challenged.
Molly and Bob were passed out on her bed, snoozing peacefully when they were both woken up to loud, frantic knocking on her bedroom door. Bob let out a huff and put a paw on her face.
“No way, I got it last toime, it’s your turn.” she moaned.
Bob huffed again and got up onto his three legs... only to walk over enough to be over his mistress’s belly and flop onto her, making her let out a small 'oomph’, her power-blocking bracelet flying off her hand as it arched up in surprise.
She scowled at him as she rubbed her sore belly, “I love you ‘n all, but you can be a roight ass sometoimes, Bob.” she grumbled at him. He didn’t dignify that with an audible response, he simply got off of her and watched her mumble angrily while she got up to get the door.
Once she opened it, she was nearly knocked over as her younger siblings crashed into her legs and held on tight, shaking and sniffling, a jar pressed firmly from the side Ben was on and fireflies bringing more light into the room to show more of the spectacle she was right now.
“... Do I even want to know?” she asked warily.
“No!” Wilhelmina cried.
“Clowns.” Ben explained.
Molly stiffened, her expression going from annoyed to uncomfortable in an instant as flashes of a disturbing dream played out in her head.
But... but this shouldn’t be happening...
Unless...
She looked down to her wrist. Yup, her bracelet was gone. She scowled at her dog, “Dammit, Bob!” she snarled. Bob let out a huff and got up again and walked down his ramp and found her bracelet and brought it back to her with an apologetic expression.
She sighed as she bent down as best she could with Ben and Willi still clinging too them and took her bracelet from his mouth and put it back onto her wrist before scratching his head, “Yeah, yeah, I forgive ya. But now tha’ I’ve seen it too, you ain’ gonna be enough ta help me feel safe enough ta sleep, let ‘lone th’ three of us.” The mutt looked a bit offended, but suffered in silence.
“Does this mean we can go to Mum and Da’s room now?” Wilhelmina asked.
“Yup, come on, off me legs.” she said, motioning for them to release her as the four of them walked to their parent’s bedroom and quietly opened the door.
Mako heard the door open and opened his eyes to see a few floating lights creeping into his room via the reflection in the window. That could only mean one thing:
The kids were up.
He rolled himself over with a low groan and looked at the four faces peeking around the open door and sighed, “Get over ‘ere.” he instructed, holding his hand out for them.
Molly placed her bracelet in his hand so she could levitate the four of them onto the bed with care, as to not disturb their sleeping mother. He handed it back to her, getting a tired ‘Ta.’ in return.
He watched his children slip under the covers and snuggle between him and his wife, who pulled a weary Wilhelmina closer in her sleep, a smile curling onto his face as he pulled all of them a little closer to them.
One by one, they fell back asleep, their faces content and calm as they slumbered. Mako then carefully pulled the jar from his son’s hands and tapped on the side of it, the fireflies slowly returning to it and, one by one, their lights went out.
He watched his family snooze happily beside him as the light faded from the room. He’d had a nightmare about being alone in the harsh, radiated Outback again, but as the last few lights went out and he felt his son’s hands grab at the sleeping shirt Angela had bought him last year, he let out a soft chuckle.
Dreams come and go, but lucky for him, his family was a dream come true.
You should know who Ben and Willi belong to by now...
@glampyra -> Wilhelmina
@the-inline-rex ->Ben
Molly and Bob belong to me
Ew...
Angela smiled as she and Mako exchanged kisses on the couch without needing to worry about their two younger children walking in and calling out, “Ew!” before fleeing the room or their now eighteen year old calling to remind them to “Warn me ‘fore ya do tha’! I don’ want ta know what you two are thinkin’ when yer bein’ all intimate ‘n stuff! It’s GROSS!” and glare at them both angrily the next time they sat down together for a meal.
And that was when they had their clothes on.
No, she had no need to worry about that tonight, since, after Molly joined Overwatch she had moved back into her old room in the dorms for training, she had been spending most of her time there. And while she missed her Chäferli, it was nice to enjoy some quality time with her hubby without needing to go shopping for more tin foil the next day. That, and with her on base most of the time instead of the little neighborhood where she and the others who had started families here (such as Jamie and Satya, Mei and Zarya, Genji (who had his brother and his eventual brother-in-law Jesse move in with him and his daughter to help out), Hana and Lúcio, and Emily and Lena), meant that, when she had days off, she would spoil not only her younger siblings, but all of the children in their little neighborhood absolutely rotten by taking them out for fun days out of the house. (Which they all appreciated.)
Today had been a strictly Rutledge sibling bonding day, which consisted of a trip to the zoo, the movies, and the arcade before coming home at dinner time. Tomorrow Molly had plans to take all the kids out for a trip to a new amusement park that had opened up on the other side of the island.
So she had no need to worry about getting up late tomorrow...
She let out a squeal when he lifted her onto his lap with ease, she loved it when he’d pick her up for cuddles like this. Even more so when he was still showering her with kisses.
But they both froze when they heard the sound of an engine roaring up their driveway, and since both her van and his motorcycle were in the garage, that could mean only one thing...
The kids were home.
They frantically flew around the room as they heard Bob’s nails clicking against the floorboards towards the door to greet the children, the two parents searching for the clothes they discarded around it as they heard the pitter patter of little feet dash up the sidewalk, Wilhelmina’s voice calling for Molly to, “Hurry up! I wanna tell Mummy and Daddy and Bob all about our day!”
“Show and tell!” Ben cheered happily, “Show and tell!”
If her current state of dress was different, Angela would have rushed out to pull both of her wee ones into a big hug. Smiling broadly at the fact that not only did her baby boy, the quietest child of the three, actually spoke out loud, but that he sounded absolutely overwhelmed with glee!
She seriously needed to find her pants or else that could change faster than she wanted it to.
“Alroight, alroight!” Molly called from farther away, “Hang on a tick! Gotta put me bike away.” They heard the garage door opening and their little ones jogging in place on their front porch. “Shite,” Mako rumbled, “We left our clothes in the living room.” he reminded her. Her stomach dropped, her babies couldn’t see that! It was not the kind of thing any child should see!
They heard the sound of footsteps and the jingling of keys, Bob’s ragged remains of a tail thumping against the ground, and raced towards the living room, hoping to at least grab their clothes and dash into their bedroom to change before they could enter the house, only to hear both sounds cease, Bob’s tail stopping shortly after.
“Molly!” Wilhelmina cried, “Come on! Open the door!”
“Open!” Ben agreed.
“Now hang on,” Molly said, “I have an idea ‘ere...”
“What kind of idea?” Wilhelmina asked, sounding uncertain if she was going to like this idea (smart girl, knowing her older sister’s somewhat impish tendencies).
“Hear me out, alroight?” Molly said, her keys jingling a bit as she went on to say that, “Mum’s probably tired from fixin’ all the butts I’ve kicked this week in trainin’ ‘n Da’s jus’ come back from a mission yesterday, so why don’ we surprise ‘um by grabbin’ some take out fer dinner?”
“Yeah!” Wilhelmina cheered, “Let’s have a pizza party! Mummy and Daddy and Bob like pizza and everyone likes parties!”
“Sounds good ta me,” Molly confirmed, “What ‘bout you, Ben?”
“...Sundaes?” Ben asked meekly.
“Of course!” Molly sang, the keys jingling again as the sounds of Wilhelmina and Ben’s laugher filled the air, “What koinda pizza party don’ have ioce cream sundaes?”
“A bad one!” they replied in unison.
“Exactly! Now let’s get yer helmets back on, ‘cause we’re goin’ back inta town! We have parents to surprise!” Molly declared, the young children’s cheers sounding softer as they moved away from the door and back towards the garage. Bob turned to the two naked humans behind him, let out a disappointed huff in their direction and waddled back towards his bed and his favorite kangaroo toy to enjoy the squeaking sounds it made when he chewed on it.
Angela and Mako let out sighs of relief... only for their phones to buzz.
It was a group text message from Molly:
‘It will take us an hour to get pizza and ice cream and get back home, you two better be wearing pants when we get back! >:( ’
Mako quickly typed out a reply and sent it, making her snort when it popped up on her phone, ‘No promises. :P ’
They then heard Molly ask loudly from outside, “Ya know what? Mum ‘n Da deserve more than jus’ sundaes, we need BROWNIE sundaes! ‘N maybe some biscuits fer Bob!” The dog’s tail wagged excitedly at that suggestion..
“That’s a great idea!” Wilhelmina exclaimed.
“Sprinkles!” Ben cried, most likely wanting to help come up with ways to make their special ‘surprise’ better.
“Good idea, what else should we get?” She asked, the little ones’ replies muffled by the distance between them.
Their phones buzzed again, ‘I ain’t keepin’ them out longer than that for dinner and dessert, we’ll be back in an hour and a half. Please be dressed when we get back!!!’
Mako started typing again, but she stopped him with a hand to his arm and typed out her own message, ‘We can work wonders with an hour and a half.’ she sent.
She then eyed him hungrily, making him smile broadly in return, the two of them putting their phones down on their coffee table and heading back to their room, Molly’s reply left unseen until the next morning;
‘Ew!’
