face
the thing on the front side of my head, when you face an adversary, the outside of something/the surface of a polyhedron, and upon googling, a representative, or an emotion, like "poker face"
i like the face on my head sometimes, other times i dont. many times i dont. when i like it it feels like a small boost, a pep in my step? but when i dont its crushing. and i dont like my face more than i do like it, i think. my partner seems to like it alot, so maybe thats worth it.
theres a mural near where i live, and a part of it has some masked cops beating up minorities. we dont see their face, and thus, their humanity, which was probably what the artist was going for.
monsters in videogames/fantasy tend to have one coloured eyes, with no iris/whites distinction, so you feel less bad about them dying. the eyes are like the face of your face.
theres this tumblr post i cant find, talking about a man, in a photo was taken where his face was contorted with anger after his sister was killed, was turned into a racist caricature. thinking about racial stereotypes, big ones i can think of are slit eyes, thick lips, big noses, those are all on the face and. well. skin color shows up on your face too.
its the promise of "race" as a concept. you get to glance at a person and find out what they are. and most people glance at faces first.
your face is a representative. it also means "representative". people love making assumptions about you based on your face, not just race, but emotions and tone, and expect you to understand them through their face which you perceive through the sight and sound organs on your face.
people are much worse at deriving a internality from a face than they think, in my experience.
you also "face" an adversary. you need to face those because all your best sensy stuff is in your face, and if you dont sense something youre ignoring it. so the quintessential quality of a face is something that gives and receives information.
but it sucks at this! we have an entire term involving face that just means "making it hard to get information from your face" and even when people try to convey facial info people suck at reading it!
faces in math are a little better... "face" is a term that doesn't really intuitively generalize to different dimensions. if you think of a face as the "outside" it might make sense for the n-1 dimensional covering of a n dimensional object to be the face, but in 2d, the face is actually the whole thing.
maybe thats the problem. we think we're living in 2d but we live in 3d...
a face conveys information, receives information, and gives you humanity. i love all those things! but faces suck at this. and also i have too many self image issues to give this a high rating.
