This was one of the first ever body castings I produced out of slipcast porcelain. Throughout my two degrees I specialised in working with Porcelain and Bone China clay. They are both very complex materials but are so satisfying to work with, and the outcomes you can produce promoting their natural whiteness, smoothness and translucent qualities are truly amazing!

Some things are tricky to teach by zoom. It’s so great to be back in the college workshops with students. (* I hope it lasts) This week getting the ED art and FAD students started on their ‘A Distance Forms around our Bodies’ pathway assignments. 8 weeks to develop a body of work, how do you start ? I would say you start by getting underway with making, drawing, testing - creative play. The ideas will develop - the first ideas are rarely the last or best ideas - if you are underway they inevitably evolve and change as you are presented with unplanned opportunities, ideas and problems. It’s a mistake to ‘wait’ for inspiration you have to get going and look for it. Fun demonstrating body casting and introducing modroc and vacuum forming this week. Only happens if you have enthusiastic volunteers, lots of fun. Latex and maybe welding and heat processes next week.
