Body Butter vs Body Crème: What’s the Difference?
Body butters and body crèmes are both designed to moisturize the skin, but they are formulated differently and provide unique experiences on the skin.
A body butter is typically an anhydrous product, meaning it contains little to no water. It is often made with a combination of butters, oils, and sometimes waxes. Because of its rich composition, a body butter tends to feel heavier and provides long-lasting moisturization.
A body crème contains both water and oils that are combined through emulsification. This creates a lighter texture that spreads easily across the skin and absorbs more quickly than most body butters.
Texture is one of the biggest differences between the two. Body butters are generally thicker and richer, while body crèmes often feel smoother, softer, and more lightweight.
Neither product is necessarily better than the other. The ideal choice depends on personal preference, skin type, climate, and the desired skin feel.
Understanding the differences between body butters and body crèmes can help formulators create products that deliver the experience they want their customers to enjoy.
