Sharing Wavelengths With Strangers | Notes on Eye Contact, Reading People & Energetic/Platonic Attractions.
I’m sure you’ve read somewhere on the internet that us humans are naturally wired to sense eye contact. Ever get that feeling someone is staring at you and when you go to check, you catch a pair of eyes locked on you? Such occurrences have always been pretty neat to me, especially due to my life long exercise of people watching. As a kid I used to watch people at the park or on the subway. Noticing the details of what they wore, their demeanor, from their body language down to their micro-expressions. Needless to say, I have been caught countless of times studying people.
I like to believe that my many years of people watching and my fathers compelling demand for eye contact when speaking to him, were the two main habits that helped me develop my refined ability to read people. Since reading people is an ability that is always on and in the background of my consciousness, sometimes I forget Its happening. There have been moments of interactions where I couldn’t shake the strange feeling between the other person and I…and thats when I realized, I picked up on a new or unfamiliar gesture. Those are the gestures that stimulate an interest in that person.
It is when I come across a person who stands out, not due to their clothing or demeanor, but the expression of their body. While these occurrences are unlikely, when they do happen I am often overwhelmed. I’m partially excited, but I also remain reserved as these new gestures could signal anything. But theres somewhat of a connection, as if we’re speaking the same language through our faces. As if we are on the same wavelength and we both energetically “know”.
In these seemingly rare occasions where I find myself intrigued by a person who I read as peculiar, I find myself writing about them more than I actually plan to approach them. It’s almost as if I fear that by interacting with them I’ll quickly be able to distinguish that they’re just another average human. Having had the experience of disappointment upon discovering one is just as surface level as the rest of the world, I would rather maintain the mystery with my new “energetic” friend, keeping them as a platonic acquaintance who I share eye contact and strange micro-expressions with.
