Happy birthday to the man who had the first story in our first issue back in April 1977 — and is still contributing to Heavy Metal to this day — Richard Corben! Here’s a selection of covers for various Corben works, starting with the ultra-rare 15 Years of Heavy Metal (even we don’t have a copy of this in the office) and the Corben special issue from Fall 1998. The others weren’t published by us in book form, though some — Sinbad, Bodyssey — appeared in Heavy Metal first. Sometimes you just gotta throw some paint down and turn the piece over and over till something starts forming... it can be scary the unknown, the void, the field... but every time without fail something will come if you keep exploring. I spent about 2hrs painting this today during a visit to the Right Brain for a Covid Fundraiser event called the Bodyssey that the Burning Man camp ‘Infinite Live’ and friends hosted. I haven’t painted any figurative work in a while and as this event was an exploration of the body and Beltane was yesterday... I felt into the sensual experience of being in a body... bodies connected to the earth. There is a morphing a transformation happening for humanity now... I like to dream into it and explore the vistas of potential in my imagination... I am excited for the blooming🌸 . Today we planted half of our garden and I sifted through buckets of black gold compost from years past now ready to be integrated in the soil... Barefoot we planted and tucked the little seeds into the earth... . Dear Participants, BOdyssey is a video art project and installation that will incorporate looped projections, paintings, a photographic archive and sculptural elements that create a futuristic international communication center in which the public is invited to explore and collaborate by speculating on the technological, social and advancement of post-human kind. The device at the center of both video production and installation is a toy camera: the Barbie Cam. Barbie Cam is a 2010 special edition Barbie doll with a video camera and playback unit embedded in its body. I was introduced to this magnificent instrument and to real time video processing while being a resident artist at Signal Culture in Upstate New York. In BOdyssey I use the Barbie Cam for its symbolic content and as an actual recording device. The project intends to build upon the role of female characters in Homers Odyssey, as well as in Stanley Kubricks pivotal sci-fi film 2001: Space Odyssey. These seminal works constitute the stepping stones for Astronaut Barbies quest into the future of the human species. For the installation I have been shooting a Barbie Cam film which is my own personal Odyssey, and I have come to develop multifarious characters through the doll s lens. During my quest I was granted the chance to meet fascinating female characters, whether professional filmmakers or everyday heroines, with different cultural origins and unusual perspectives on life. I have invited them to participate in the project by providing them with their own Barbie Cam and with the request to film their respective viewpoints and perspectives of the times we are living in. I have asked these women to put forth their personal comments and statements, along with whatever playfulness they might be triggered to devise, while discovering the characteristics of the Barbie Cam as both camera and minor female character.

Tegnap végre megkaptam az egyik szülinapi ajándékom, a Bodyssey előadást. Kifejezetten gátakat áttörő, újszerű "színház" élmény volt, amit én nem is neveznék annak. Egy óra letakart szemmel, minden más érzékszervedre viszont szükség van. Nagyon fárasztó, mivel csak a hallás-tapintás-szaglás az, ami alapján tájékozódsz, és átéled Odüsszeusz és Pénelopé történetét egy segítő vezetésével, aki végigkalauzol az úton. Nemcsak az ő történetükről szól a dolog, magad is részese vagy, átéled, kiegészíted saját élményeiddel, érzelmeiddel, tapasztalataiddal és fantáziáddal. A segítőd az idő nagy részében veled van, szerepeket játszik, hogy Odüsszeusz, hol a fiad, hol csak egyszerűen a segítőd. Ha lesz hasonló előadás Budapesten, biztosan elmegyek!
