As a family, we went to tae kwon do today. Exciting! We got there a bit late since it’s a tight squeeze between the boy’s last appointment and the start of the family class. But we made it with minimal fuss.
I went through the warmup/stretching, and then I got paired up with a 2nd degree black belt (Tom) to show me a bunch of kicks. Front snap kick. Side kick. Inside crescent kick. Outside crescent kick. Roundhouse. Axe kick. I did a lot of kicking. Tom even had to ask if I’ve studied before - nope, this was my first class (though I’ve seen my wife and kids do a bunch of these things and I like to think I’ve got a pretty decent sense of what my body’s doing and can mimic these types of things fairly decently).
After I was all good and sweaty from all the kicking, Tom showed me a few of the self defense forms they teach. I think I was less good with these. Not only do I feel like I need to give (and receive) a little more “personal space” when I’m dripping sweat, I also struggle with how much to “pull” the punches. Tom came at me with a right punch and I’m supposed to block it, chop him in the neck, give him a one-two gut punch, and a one-two kick to the outsides of his knees. And of course I’m supposed to not make (too much?) contact.
Last up was going through the chun-gi. Something not too dissimilar to this:
I’m going to have some issues with these unless I can come up with some way to get the pattern into my head. We did it 3-4 times (with my wife joining in for the last couple) and I felt like I was barely remembering what to do when.
I’m unsure yet if I want to try to track anything regarding tae kwon do. My wife had started wearing a heart rate monitor a few months ago, but she’s counting calories. I am not, so I don’t think I want the added hassle of the chest strap. I did clip my fitbit to the waistband of my dobok pants, so there’s that :) I had my Fenix3 on for most of the class, but decided I should take it off when I started blocking Tom’s “punches”.
I was a little sad I didn’t get to break any boards - I always saw the kids do it at the end of their classes. Until I asked my wife about it later and she said it’s primarily for kids anyhow. So, boo hoo.
We got home after class and had a quick meal my wife threw together, then it was time for my daughter’s homework and I did some lifting.
I think I destroyed my quads with the squats (and after all the kicking), so the rest of the day I’ve been walking around with what seems like more soreness than I was the day after the Chicago Marathon. Go figure.
