"Bilbo was right... you cannot see what you have become."
Thorin felt something crack inside his heart as he looked up at Dwalin, the choked whisper echoing inside his head.
He turned away, swallowing hard past the denial he cannot seem to voice, confused and uncertain. An uneasiness began to fill him, like being swallowed in a rushing tide of self-doubt as the words continued to batter the inside of his skull. He raises his hand to his face, pressing his fingers to his temple as if to banish them. Instead, he realizes his hand is shaking and he cannot help but stare at it helplessly.
"Dwalin...?" he attempts, words like rocks in his mouth and he bites his lip as the shake in his hand only grows worse. For a moment he sees not his fingers, but the gasping throat of his burglar, terror-filled eyes staring helplessly down at the king as Thorin rages against him. The shaking has moved beyond his arm now and he turns to face his shield-brother as a cold sweat breaks across his brow.
"Where.... where is the hobbit?"

Damn that trailer. Damn you PJ. Why was I given emotions?!
That scene just about broke my heart and got the waterworks going and I just had to get this little tidbit AU idea out of my head before it consumed me.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll being holding myself in corner somewhere and waiting for the weeping to stop.
