“Why does Bobby call you frogspawn?”

Reggie blinked up at Willie, giving a moment for the odd colours and dots to clear out of his vision before the other person came into clear vision. “Hm?”

“I’m sorry, is that intrusive?”

“No, no,” Reggie said, sitting up. It’s just a nickname, I guess. We both have, um… an affinity? For some kinds of animals. I guess it’s a side effect or something, from our growing up. We’re a little less human, at least in manner. When we were both kids, we desperately wanted frogs to like us. I used to sit next to the frogspawn hatching sites, hoping that if the tadpoles saw me as soon as they hatched, they’d like me. It never worked, but the name stuck.”

This is a polyam prince/Fae/guards au and I love it so fucking much so this is gonna be long

So, we have Alex: prince of a very intolerant kingdom that’s not only homophobic but it’s also very anti Fae, my dude is raised with a lot of prejudices but he’s a good human and he’s acknowledging that and working on it. When he’s 25, his parents decide he needs a full time personal guard, since he’s of age to become more involved with decisions and stuff.

Introducing Bobby and Reggie, members of the guard. They were raised by Rayvorose, where Trevor is just a lord who happened to fall in love with two faeries who thought he was neat. Rayrose don’t quite understand humans and Trevor is fucking smitten, and the result is two Fae children (Julie and Carlos) who act like slightly more socialised Fae, and three human children (Bobby and Carrie, twins, and Reggie, who Rayvorose accidentally adopted when he was 14) who are entirely feral and very Fae in nature even if they’re still dumb little humans. The boys join the military, serve their five years to join the ranks, and rise up quickly because they’re absolutely nuts but inhumanly graceful (when not around cute boys) and they get assigned to Alex.

Alex and Bobby and Reggie are a thing at the start of the fic that was just background.

So, Willie is the child of Caleb Covington, king of a neighbouring country that’s really ducking important for trade to the mercer’s, and also super tolerant. Willie gets sent across as an envoy/ambassador, and is.... not expecting it to go well. They first meet Alex and boggie stumbling across the three + Luke + Julie + Flynn on a picnic, Reggie and Bobby rolling in the mud and peppering each other’s faces with kisses while Alex cheers them on anf is like hm. Maybe not so bad. And then over a year or so they grow closer and get together anf we get so much of the boys being fools and just. On the one hand not functioning but also considering the odds they’re doing v well
