WORLDBUILDING!!
Some worldbuilding I had left over from June that I hadn’t posted yet.
Some creatures illustrated are extant, others are extinct. Nef and Kel-goran are common food crops for the Bogiwazl themselves. Life on their planet developed very similarly to life on earth, including a few great extinction events in the prehistoric past.
There is much more variety in the life on the planet; the creatures illustrated here are only a small sample.
The Bogiwazl have had several millenia of society and history so far, so this is really only background information.
Day 1: Introduction
The REM Worlds
REM is a comic about dreams. It prominently features themes of space exploration, and there are several alien worlds that are connected ... somehow. Are they real or are they figments of the imagination? Only time will tell...
I couldn’t decide which world to choose for worldbuilding so I’m going to be building on several of them. I will be focusing on three of these “worlds” still in development.
The Noroiru are a race of tribal plant people who developed on a planet with scorching days and freezing nights. Their day is approximately as long as their year, so almost half the planet is a burnt wasteland and the other a frozen tundra. In the other small percentage of land, life somehow developed. Talk about small margins! My theory is that the temperature extremes are what forced plants on this planet to either become very mobile or to propagate quickly. The name Noroiru means “those who walk between the dark and the light.” The people themselves are more grass-like than tree-like, and have a very tribal/clan-based cooperative society that spans the small habitable sliver of their globe. (Credit goes to k25ff for the name)
The Bogiwazl are a race of aliens who are at about the same level of technology as early 1800′s Earth. They have cities, ships and the beginnings of basic industrial machinery. They even have trains! However, their dominant civilization is very much ruled by warring factions with a lot of political strife. They tend to be poor at communication and quick to get angry when things go wrong. They are extremely loyal to their factions, which work somewhat like the medieval guild system. Their world has a great deal more marshes and wetlands than ours has, and they have a couple notable inland seas.
The Sentesca are a race of small blue humanoid aliens who love science. They have “giant mechas” which are … approximately human sized. They have a childlike awe of everything in the universe, and are very excitable. Their society is mainly matriarchal, and they age very slowly (reaching maturity at about 300 Earth years old). They continually get taller as they age, but the tallest ones are only about 1.5 feet tall. They are eager to map the stars and record everything they can find out about the universe. Strangely enough, they are also very emotional creatures, and have very caring and familial societies. They do not have very good long-term memories, with most of their brainpower devoted to experiencing the here-and-now. This is how they can keep their childlike nature throughout their lives, but it also necessitates that they keep records of everything. They tell the story of a great prehistoric cataclysm, and the barren surface of their planet bears witness to this event. Most life survives underground in an elaborate network of caverns and hive-like cities. The major food source of the Sentesca are subterranean fungi.
Worldbuilding June
I have 4 general worlds/peoples I could work on.
The Noroiru: A race of tribal plant people on a planet with scorching days and freezing nights.
The Bogiwazl: A race of aliens who are at about the early 1800′s level of technology
The Sentesca: A race of small blue aliens who love science. They have “giant mechas” which are ... human sized.
The Monsterverse: You can’t be human. (I wonder how much more I could build into this anyway)
I have plans to feature the first three in REM. Which one do you want to see more about?
The problem with factions in REM is that there are actually too many of them. I mean, the Bogiwazl have like 15 factions all on their own.
