Hi! :D For the prompts, either (because I'm hideously predictable) Waxer/Boil - huddling for warmth, or Thorn - presumed dead (because I was looking at a list of tropes and didn't even know that was one, haha). No pressure for either, of course!

The ice cracks, and Boil vanishes. For long, long seconds, Waxer stays where he is, frozen with horror and fear and disbelief.

(Later, he won’t remember how he managed to find Boil, how he helped him out of the freezing, dark waters under the frozen lake. He doesn’t know how he got them back to the shore, how he put up the tent and got them out of their armour.

Every time he tries to remember—later, during the debrief, and also when Boil himself asks him about it, awe and fondness in his voice—it’s like the memories are just out of reach. He remembers the cold and the dark; he remembers the white-blue snow, shining bright under the planetoid’s lonely little moon, and he remembers his fear and Boil’s waxy, pale skin, his unseeing eyes.)

Boil’s body is a familiar, loved mechanism. Waxer gets him out of the water, grabs for the surviving tent, puts it up, his mind blank and buzzing and his actions thoughtless. Boil’s comms on his side are dead; the water must have gotten into his helmet. The bucket seal may have failed, but the only reason he is still alive after so long underwater, despite the lack of oxygen and the freezing cold, is his armour, the thermoregulated and insulated suit underneath. Waxer can see his icon on the corner of his own HUD, the short string of numbers still shining a familiar and comforting bright blue.

At first he hesitates: maybe he should leave it on—but it’s soaking wet, and the circuits are fried and in the end he bites his lip so hard he tastes blood and comes to a decision, fear twisting in his belly and making his hands shake.

Waxer switches on the small heating unit, zips the sleeping bags together, gets out the emergency blankets, crackly and so very light, lays them over the bags, and then he takes off his bucket, his gloves, and starts taking Boil’s armour off.

First, the bucket: Boil’s eyes are closed and his face pale and his hair wet, the curls black and sticking to his forehead, his mouth—his serious, loved mouth, with that stupid moustache Waxer has come to love despite himself. Gauntlets, vambraces, greaves, cuisses and codplate and skidplate, belt and cuirass and the pauldrons. Blacks off and, then, into the bag; Waxer follows him seconds later, naked like the day he was decanted and shivering in the cold air, and curls all around Boil, wishing for something hot to drink, for the comfort of his brothers or a Venator, for Boil’s dark brown eyes looking into his, always calm and steady and full of faith.

They make it through the night. Waxer wakes up from a restless sleep, and there he is: still pale, and tired, grey around the edges with exhaustion and the cold, but alive and almost warm, one broad palm going up and down Waxer’s spine.

“Hey, Wax,” Boil says, voice creaking like a lartie breaking atmo. The hand on Waxer’s back disappears, reappears on his jaw, and he closes his eyes, leans into the touch; his eyes are wet, relief and fear intermingling in his chest.

“Please don’t do that again,” he whispers, his mouth against Boil’s shoulder; Boil exhales, shaky and wet and warm.

“I’ll try.”

Pairing: Boil/Waxer Rating: Explicit Summary:  Waxer runs his sponge over a plate that’s already spotless. “So, you thought any more about what you want to do?”

“Oh, sure.” Out of the corner of his eye, Waxer sees Boil smirk at him. “I think I’ll be a food critic. I’ll eat all your cooking just to tell you it needs more rosemary or some shit—hey!”

Boil throws his hands up as Waxer sends a wave of dirty dishwater his way, and then he snaps his dish towel at Waxer’s ass in retaliation. Waxer dances backwards, wet plate held up like a shield and laughing, wheezing, helpless to stop.

They simply didn’t know what the line meant, not for the longest time, and after discovering… well, it just hadn’t been something they’d felt the need to share.
