when they'd jumped through that portal, jim never imagined it would lead to this. forced into a life of domesticity so different from that on the enterprise. his feet on solid ground, sharing almost every moment with- spock. but despite how jim has always insisted that he'll never settle anywhere but on a ship, this doesn't feel wrong, even if they're still on a mission.

the vulcan's presence in the small bed beside him is calming- he's never slept well. but just when he's about to drop off, he feels the other shift beside him. he looks over in the darkness, expecting spock to be looking at him ready with one theory or another on the tip of his tongue, but no. his eyes are closed, breaths deeper than normal. spock draws closer to him, their bodies pressing together under the sheets.

jim finds himself holding his breath. despite being one of the few people spock would ever consider being vulnerable with, this still feels like a huge step. one that he won't disturb even if his life depends on it. he can't help but to watch him; expression so unconstrained in sleep. hair no longer lays in a perfectly straight line & he has to fight the urge to smooth it back into place.

yet, it feels like he's almost. . . taking advantage. so no matter how much he would like to take in this moment, to memorise the way spock's face looks beneath that vulcan veneer, he simply closes his eyes & tries to drop off into sleep while laying on his back, vulcan tucked neatly into one side.

hazel eyes catch the sun as he looks towards spock. he knows it to be true, but the words spoken aloud settle something within his mind. hand reaches out to rest upon the vulcan's shoulder in a familiar gesture. now whether it's to soothe spock or himself, jim cannot tell, but then he's looking back towards their surroundings, trying to find something they can use to blend in. with no contact with the ship, it appears that's their only plan until it's re-established.
