How do i go on with my life after watching that
Barbie (2023) has wlw references. Bombshell (2019) existed before Barbie (2023). And I'm seeing people linking Bombshell with Barbie just to say that Kate McKinnon predicted Margot Robbie as Barbie, BUT in BOMBSHELL there is a scene where they sleep together. So, Weirdo Barbie slept with Stereotypical Barbie.
wtf!!! I could not believe
Finally saw Bombshell and like, on the one hand the inner psyche of female conservative commentators genuinely fascinates me so I liked getting to see that explored onscreen. On the other hand, while the film certainly didn't frame these women as heroes beyond reproach, there was virtually no mention of the horrific racism and transphobia that they helped push during their tenures at Fox news.
Also, I get that the point of the film was supposed to be a commentary on sexual harassment in general rather than a "Fox news is bad and here's why" kind of movie, but like there's no way that exclusively white women were harassed at Fox. I love Margot Robbie and I think she did a fantastic job, but if her character had been a black or Latina woman she could have just been so much MORE, y'know? She could have represented the bigger picture.
I've seen the trailer for Bombshell, and while it looks interesting and I love Margot Robbie, am I the only one kinda cautious about these women being made into heroes? Megyn Kelly has said some vile racist shit. Gretchen Carlson has been really transphobic and racist in the past. Like I can't forget they were on Fox News, the awful right wing propaganda machine. Idk what they're like now, I don't follow their careers, I hope they've learned better. This movie just low-key screams White Feminism™ to me, and some of the reviews I've read say I'm not far off, which sucks. What happened to them was terrible and they deserve to be believed and tell their story. At the same time, I'm not gonna forget what they've said and done. Hopefully they've changed. If not, Ms. Kelly and Carlson, don't only fight for the rights of white women like you. Pondering done.
