The Case for 21st century Bonapartism in ten bullet points:

1. We must fulfill (finish: complete and perfect) the promise of the revolutionary sequence of events (1789-1917-1949, etc)

2. We must fulfill it in conditions where the process is threatened by ultra leftists on the one hand who have no real plan and reactionaries on the other who all too certainly have a real plan to bring back the seigneurs.

3. We must achieve this not on an abstract plane but within specific historical sites of national, cultural, and religious life.

4. We must achieve this not by pseudo-revolutionary hostility to the real social gains of liberalism OR by servile dependence on its forms that are so easily captured by elites who resent interference.

5. The state that embodies the revolution must also be an armed prophet, capable of creating the geopolitical space whereby new institutions and codes can take root.

6. Bonapartism is the name for continued fidelity to the revolutionary sequence, without pretending to either independence from it or to an original purity.

7. Bonapartism is dynamic rejection of all wreckers, whether they call themselves right or left, even as it rallies all constructive elements to the project of reconstruction.

8. Bonapartism is the tying of the revolution to a multitude of temporal, mental, and spatial configurations, allowing the particularities of the various peoples to be expressed and contribute to the universal cause.

9. Bonapartism both fullfills liberalism and points beyond it, and does so by maintaining the political independence of the state from new and old elites.

10. Finally, Bonapartism is the affirmation of the importance of military force in the maintenance and spreading of the revolution. No new order of freedom without a new order of states.

Napoleon was one of the most consequential men of Western history. As such, he has served as a symbol and as an historical ideal, in Huizinga’s sense. But Napoleon meant many things to many men, so his use as a symbol is always ambiguous, and the many meanings that have been associated with the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire have never converged on a single vision of history.
