Nobody cares about Arthur's weird little boyfriend Ricky the way I do

Okay, the Netflix Texas Chainsaw is bad

We all know its bad ( the characters are bad, the influencer plot line is dumb, sally coming back didn't have a good payoff and it just felt like everyone was stupid)

But I find enjoyment in some of the characterization and the appearance of Leatherface

I love the way he is just this imposing and obscured figure until right before shit starts to go down

The way he processes what happened and grieves just had so much potential

I like him wearing the face of someone important to him rather than just some victim's. Felt like his way of holding onto her.

and then just

smelling and holding her clothes, putting on her makeup, just sitting in her room at her vanity

I feel like Leatherface losing a caregiver/loved one had potential, but the execution of the rest of the plot wasn't the best.

That one dramatic Riddler panel is going around again. I've seen several lovey redraws already and I love them so very much.

And it made me want to discuss the comic this panel is actually from: Detective Comics (1937) Annual #8. The comic is actually the perfect summary of Riddler's character and his basic backstory. I highly recommend it. Though I assume many of you have already read it. Uhhhh major spoilers for a really old comic ahead. (please go read it, the ending is worth it and I spoil it here in this post)

This comic shows Riddler laying out his entire backstory clearly to the reader. He spills his entire life story and gets shockingly honest about the whole thing.

He goes into his childhood and how miserable he was. How he had to cheat to make himself seem better than other people. This comic is full of good panels of Edward being sad. He throws himself on the floor... like more than once.

and when you actually read what he saying, he's not entirely being dramatic (okay maybe a little). He has a lot to be rightfully upset about but I can admit some of it is just... him.

And the iconic panel shows up when he talks about a time Batman caught him.

He was humiliated and this was never the type of attention he was seeking.

"Here in arkham." I love that one sentence that sort of reframes the story if you haven't already put it together. Of course, he is telling this story to his psychologist.

and the comics ends with him angry that they're not responding and breaking the glass separating him from them.

only to see

no one.

no one was listening.

and no one cares.

Thats the twist.

I'm with you on ricky x arthur they're so good!

Thankfully the movie isnt very popular, cus if it was ppl would not be normal about their relationship having a pretty big age gap

Esp if ppl can't even be normal about sadder aspects of the film/making them into "jokes"

Anyway tldr want to be off anon to ship them, but need to make an alt in case of jerks

Ricky is clearly easily influenced. To the point where I'd say the ship is a bit morally ambiguous (which just makes it better IMO)

When he's walking up to Arthur the subtitles say this

and while this could be being said about Arthur I'm inclined to think it is about Ricky.

He seems gullible, almost innocent? But he's in the high-security ward at Arkham so he did something, I just don't think the movie ever told us.

Anyway, my point is he is easily influenced. He is a natural follower. He literally follows Arthur around when they're outside together. He copies him by getting up on the table in the cafeteria scene. Being around Arthur seems to embolden him enough to start standing up to the guards as shown here:

and as in the scene that gets him killed, when he starts singing "The saints go marching in" in both defiance of the guards and in support of Arthur who had just been horrifically assaulted.

Its Arthur's influence that leads Ricky to act out in ways he clearly hasn't before if the guards' reactions are anything to go by. They're both so pathetic but Ricky seems like he can't help but see Arthur as 'cool' and therefore getting to be close to him makes Ricky more confident.

There is a clear power imbalance between him and Arthur, even ignoring their ages (Ricky seems in his 20s and Arthur is in his mid-to-late-30s (honestly I'm guessing but it doesn't seem that bad)). Ricky looks up to him. Arthur is almost never on this side of an imbalance in a relationship. Just two examples: his 'friendship' with one of the guards and his romance with Lee. He is not in control, he is not the one who influences the other person pretty much ever.

With Ricky it is different.

I keep seeing joker 2 reviews that either open with either "I never saw the first one" or something like "I HATE HATE HATE MUSICALS. I'VE NEVER LIKED A SINGLE ONE I'VE EVER SEEN." and I just gotta be so real with y'all

why'd ya even go see it in the first place?
