It’s an animal farm now and I’m glad it isn’t houses instead but a few years ago before its sale this pond and the land around it were only mowed once or twice a year and it was full of native wetland plants. It looked like this in late August. I would see wood ducks, herons and egrets there in different seasons and lots of species in migration. I’m grateful that I knew it then.

Fanstastic late summer/early autumn outfit, pairing this brightly colored kimono showing mushikago (insect cages) among akikusa (autumn plants*), paired with a matching if more muted obi depicting an adorable suzumushi (cricket) among hagi (bushclover).

*usually the seven ones depicted together are => bushclover/hagi ; pampas grass/susuki ; Chinese bellflower/kikyou ; arrowroot/kuzu ; maidenflower/ominaeshi ; pinks/nadeshiko ; boneset/fujibakama.

Apothecary Boxes 2 & 3

These boxes are much smaller than the first one.

The second one from left to right, top to bottom contains: elderflower, sunflower, powdered pine resin, whole pine resin.

The third box is empty except for one drawer with some dried amaranth leaves. The other drawers will probably be filled with boneset and goldenrod in upcoming months.

The water level at Tygart Lake was well below summer pool this past weekend - maybe twenty feet lower. This could be due to the normal late summer drawdown by the U.S. Corps of Engineers or the extended dry spell in N-C WV or both. The lower water level has exposed enormous rock formations along the lake's shoreline, which are normally submerged, as well as an artificial reef created from discarded Christmas trees in the Pleasant Creek tailwaters. It's easy to see why scuba divers love this place. The marshy areas have been heavily impacted; Blake and I found several fragile papershell mussels (Potamilus fragilis) exposed in the muddy substrate and picked over by a predator. These are among our largest native bivalve mollusks and can reach up to 7 inches in length. As with all of our freshwater "mussels", they are not true mussels but are sometimes referred to as river mussels and belong to the family Unionidae. Other notable finds: the colorful red seedpods of buttonbush; an immature green frog (Lithobates clamitans); a delicate and lovely aquatic plant, the grassy arrowhead (Sagittaria graminea), also known as grass-leaf arrowhead; and a gorgeous black-shouldered spinyleg dragonfly (Dromogomphus spinosus), too awesome for words.
