Whether you love or hate my cringey, secret inner child Ronaldo, you should pay attention to him if you want any sort of theory fuel or foreshadowing stuff.
Here’s a bit in Full Disclosure where Ronaldo and Steven are ‘brooding’ at a hilltop - I think it might be the same one with the blooming moss from Dead Man’s Mouth.
This has happened a couple times now - a character is mentioned or pictured just before or after something that is actually about them. Ronaldo mentions Dewey, then starts talking about himself and Steven.
Thing is, Ronaldo is actually talking for Dewey here:
Ronaldo: Didn't you hear? Mayor Dewey is calling everyone back into the city. We can go home now. Oh! I see - you come up here to brood, too.
Ronaldo: Yes, Steven. That's just what people like us do - suffer quietly, shouldering the knowledge no one else can bear.
Ronaldo: As an aficionado of the weird yourself, you've probably noticed ordinary people fear the cold, leaded anchor of the truth. The abyss is no Sunday swamp ride.
Steven: I know! My dad flipped out when I told him.
Ronaldo: Sounds typical, but it's a good reminder - this is no easy path we've chosen here. There are sacrifices. Look at them all down there, Steven -
Ronaldo: It's our duty to let those simple people live out their simple lives, without ever knowing the burden of being friends with us.
Steven: At least we can be there for each other.
Ronaldo: ...is that giant hand from the sky sitting right in the middle of the beach?! I gotta get some of this for my blog!
Even up to the end here this is pretty telling. Dewey has got a bunch of secrets he has to keep - ones that make it difficult for him to be emotionally present for anyone else.
Dewey either can’t or won’t say the Gems’ names directly - he freaked out and had Ronaldo thrown out of his office when he thinks Ronaldo is talking about a cover-up. What in the world is Dewey hiding? Is any of that going to change now that he isn’t mayor anymore?
