I am back with another question!
When it comes to colouring with water colours, how can you avoid mixing them? Because it's water colour, it seems almost inevitable that you'll end up mixing colours when you layer them.
But what if i paint a background and then draw something on top, which needs to be painted a completely different colour? Do i let it dry and then paint over? Will that cause a mixing issue?
Ahhh....what a beautifully complicated medium. 😩💦
a good question!
Watercolors are transparent, so if you want to put one color on top of another, the colors will mix/affect each other!
if you want to avoid mixing them what you'd have to do is plan ahead and not paint the area you want to avoid mixing on, use tape or some kind of masking fluid to protect that area from paint, or use gouache!
generally, if the colors really need to be absolutely different, it's easier to just Not Paint the areas that have to be other colors
as u can see below the layered watercolor is mixed, the stuff that was left white then painted later is clear, and the one which is painted with gouache...
well, the gouache is identifiably its own color since its opaque, but its also identifiably Not watercolor bc it doesnt show the texture of the paint or paper beneath it, so i usually dont use gouache unless i have to
these r two tiny demonstrations of other more complicated ways to protect white paper space, the sloppy henohenomoheji on the left is w/ masking fluid and the right ofc is tape kjghskjdgh
When you paint with watercolor, do you usually do a single color - wait for it to dry - then layer more colours? Or do you just layer colours all at once? I'm still learning how to use water colours and they are sooooo complicated but you make it look so easy! ><
both! if you apply watercolor when its still wet, as i'm sure you've found, it blends really easily, and that can create a cool effect, but it can also pull up the colors beneath it much easier
if you apply watercolor on top of another (dried) watercolor, it often just sits on top, and will have a crisp edge unless you try to soften it
both of these can be really cool effects to play with, and I encourage you to use both! the best way to get good at watercolors is to play around with them! try putting the water down first, then adding the paint to that. add paint, wait until it dries, and then try to lift the paint from the paper with a brush that just has water, try anything u can imagine, just have fun and experiment and see what feels enjoyable to you! art is about having fun, and the more that you do fun little experiments like this, the better you understand the medium you're playing in, the more confident you will feel, and the better you will be at it too!
Hello! Do you plan on writing another part for So this is Love? It is such a lovely story, I like it a lot! :)
To be quite honest, I never expected it to genuinely interest people the way it has recently.
I would like to continue it but I am quite rusty, I doubt it'll be as great as it is now but yes, I will be making an updated 3rd chapter. It'll be out in another week or so.
