I'm writing a very heavily politically charged sci-fi book (zombies, to be accurate.) This is about the 4th time I've restarted it. I'm well aware that as I actually have a really good start to it, I'll need beta readers, and I'm white af so I'll absolutely need sensitivity readers, especially for black and Mexican Americans. When I have something more concrete, I'll start searching for them. I want to actually get through the first draft and I'll never finish that if I have to make all the corrections as I go. I already get stuck on every single detail 🙃 in any case, the book is meant to be realistic, and is set in present day, and there will be both true events, and fictional events. I may make up protests to fit characters, and characters in important positions. I'm debating if I should be calling ICE what it is, or make up my own thing, by most importantly, I'm not sure if I should call Tr*mp by name, or come up with a fictional name. On one hand, I want this book to be as much a telling of the horrors, as much as several strong messages. Books tell history, even fiction books, and I'm worried that not using their names or names that remind the reader of who it represents will be lost in the future. We're living through something, we know the memes, and the small things going on as much as the big things, and that might be lost to future generations (meaning they might not be able to tell based on behavior even though we can.) On the other, legal action? We know he's a big whiny baby with a lot of money, and I'm just a disabled homeless queer from New York. So now I ask your opinion, Tumblr. (And if you'd be interested in being a beta/sensitivity reader in the future, please do feel free to pm me. I won't be able to pay you much, but I'd give you a shout-out, and whatever I can afford.)
