Chapter 3

Ingrid placed a flower near her father’s burial stone, warm tears streaming down her cheeks and sniffles coming from her. Astrid placed a hand on her shoulder, taking a step next to her and bowing her head.

“I’m so sorry, Ingrid.” She said quietly. “Your father was a positive, kind man. I know I took advice from him more than once.” She smiled. “Ingrid, you can take as long as you like to recover from this.”

“Thank you.” Ingrid swallowed down her sob. “But I think a day or two will be fine, then I should return to the palace.”

“Ingrid, please. You’ve done so much, the least I can do for you is give you some time off.”

“She’s right.” Loki said, catching their attentions. “At least to recover.”

Ingrid looked up at him then at Astrid. “I suppose you’re both right. But only for a few days, then I should go back.”

Astrid smiled sympathetically, then turned on her heel and left Loki and Ingrid alone. Ingrid turned back to her father’s stone, Loki watching her. “What are you going to do now?” He asked.

She inhaled deeply then looked up at him. “Clean his room, now that I live alone. I’m sorry. I never apologized for crying in your arms.”

“Don’t apologize.” He placed his hand on her shoulder. “If you need any help with moving anything, please tell me. I wouldn’t mind helping.”

“Thank you, Prince Loki, but you should spend your time with Astrid. She is your future bride, of course.”

“Yes, but you are her closest friend, I’m sure she—”

“Goodbye, Prince.” Ingrid turned and left.

Entering the palace felt a bit weird. It’s been a week and a half since I last saw or spoke to Astrid and Loki. Or anyone else for that matter. So finally seeing me would put a smile on Astrid’s face, she didn’t know I was returning today.

“She hasn’t sent anything? Any letters?” Astrid asked a servant. “Anything indicating that she is all right? No one has seen her?”

“Astrid?” I said from behind.

She turned around, seeing me. She ran to me, hugging me tightly. “Ingrid, it’s so good to see you.”

We pulled away, just as I said, a smile on her face. “You really missed me?”

“Of course I did! Why wouldn’t I?” She lead me to the door. “Loki’s in the library. Why don’t you say hi to him while I go see my father. Father’s a bit worried about the decision I made lately. I’ll tell you about it later.”

I listened to her, leaving to go say hi to Loki in the library. When I got there it was quiet, I could hear pages flipping and someone clearing their throat. Loki. I found him sitting in a chair, very interested in a book in his hands. He took a glimpse at me when I approached him, he then put the book down and smiled.

“Ingrid.” he said softly. “You’ve returned. I was beginning to worry that you weren’t returning.”

“Hello, Prince Loki.”

“Please, just Loki. I get enough of that at home.”

I looked down at the book he was reading. It was one of my favorites. “You were reading that?”

“Oh, yes. It’s quite interesting. You know this one?”

“Yes. It’s one of my favorites. I never get tired of it.”

“Well, I’m almost done reading it.”

“Loki, I would like to apologize to you for my behavior the day we last spoke. I was sad that my father died and I just wanted to be alone.”

“I should be the one apologizing, you needed your space and I was pushing you. I’m sorry.”

“I suppose all is forgiven.” we both smiled.

“Loki? Ingrid?” Astrid voice caught our attention, she smiled when she saw us. “Good. I thought you two left.” she laughed.

“Uh, actually, it is time for me to go.” Loki went over to Astrid, holding her hands in his. “With Ingrid back I’m sure you want to catch up with her. I also have things in Asgard that I must do before the day is over.”

“Okay.” she grinned.

Loki kissed her forehead then looked over at me with a smile. I returned the smile, ignoring the fact that he and Astrid would marry one day. He left us alone in the library. Astrid motioned me to follow her out of the library, we went to the courtyard where we sat on a bench in the shades.

“About two days ago, Ingrid, father and I were having a conversation, just the two of us. That conversation somehow lead to Loki.”

“He’s worried about you marrying Loki?”

“No. He’s just worried about me leaving to go with Loki to Asgard.”

“Well, you are the only child, Astrid.”

“I know.” she sighed. “I just love him, Ingrid, and I want us to be happy together, you know? He hasn’t kissed me yet, though.”

“What? You two have known each other for almost two months. You two haven’t…?”

She laughed. “Oh, Ingrid, no. If we did I would’ve told you to keep it a secret. I’m afraid he only kisses me on my forehead and gives me flowers. What am I going to do? What if he doesn’t like me?”

“I’m sure he likes you, Astrid. He just doesn’t want to rush things, I’m sure. Don’t worry. He likes you.”
