To celebrate The Healer—a novella that lets us get to know swoony John—we have a fun feature for you! We all love Elizabeth and John together (clearly!) but if things didn’t work out between the two (gasp!), who would Virginia hook Elizabeth up with? There are so many good book boyfriends out there, so we’re dying to find out who else would be a good match for our girl, Elizabeth. Let’s find out.
At first blush, it may not appear that John and Elizabeth would make a good match. Elizabeth is headstrong and impulsive, tempestuous and uncertain. John, by all rights, is very nearly the opposite: cautious and calm, secure and self-assured. While Elizabeth’s journey in The Witch Hunter is one of discovering who she is in the face of all that she is not, John is an unchanging force in the ever changing world around him.
Attraction is a magic in its own right, with often no rhyme or reason to why two very different people come together. But to turn the spell of romance into the permanence of love there has to be something else, something that transcends that initial attraction. For these two characters, mutual intrepidness certainly plays a part. But there are other reasons, too, and I hope that after reading The Healer, you’ll come to understand what they are.
Were John to disappear (let us never speak of it) and Elizabeth be transported to another YA world, I think the closest match for her is Sean Kendrick from Maggie Steifvater’s The Scorpio Races. Like John, Sean has a preternatural connection with nature (were you to call magical, murderous water horses on the island of Thisby natural!) and can achieve things with them that no one else can. This understanding, borne of years of experience, means he doesn’t need words to understand the behavior of people, either.
Sean, too, is sure of himself, his words and his actions; and is uncompromising in his beliefs. He’s also no stranger to the surprise of a girl coming into his life and turning it upside down, showing him both that bravery comes in different faces, and that sometimes you don’t know what you’re looking for until you find it.
Elizabeth and Puck share similar qualities too: Puck is fierce and headstrong, she makes decisions first and asks questions later. She is full of doubt and fear, persevering despite of it. Puck is not, shall we say, as violent as Elizabeth, but were Puck to swap worlds and circumstances with her, she would be a contender: I have every confidence she’d survive Elizabeth’s witch hunting training.
Sean and Elizabeth; John and Puck. I ship it.
