I'm really curious what are herping and birding?

ooh well these are the practices of going out into the wilds and searching for animals. so birding is a more widely known sort of thing, it’s like bird watching. herping is for reptiles and amphibians and often insects and arachnids and..basically anything you can find on the ground, or in water. with herping you generally have to catch the thing you’re after cause otherwise it’ll be gone in a few seconds (and also it’s just really fun. have you ever held a big fat old sundrunk water snake cause i have). so the best times around here for herping are just when the weather is fair and warm, and also, most reptiles are nocturnal so people tend to go out around sunset or at night looking for certain ones. rural roads tend to be a good spot for snakes. but yeah autumn tends to be hatching season so there’s TEENY babies everywhere in addition to adults so i really wanna get out there and find some babies this year.
