Book Discussion Challenge: Snow

Snow is not a common occurrence for me, so I don’t have a list of my favorite snowy day reads. There’s only really one book that I think of when I think of snow, and that’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I’ve read the book probably about four or five times, and I’ve seen the movie countless times. I just love the magic and wonder of Lucy walking through the wardrobe from England in the summer to Narnia in the winter. 

What are y’all’s favorite books to read on snowy days? Or what books remind you of the snow?

Book Discussion Challenge Day 9: Transportation

During school/university I sometimes feel guilty if i’m reading instead of studying. So I read on the bus/while waiting for the bus because I know that otherwise it would be dead time anyway. Also, I usually choose books that i think I wouldn’t necessarily love, so I don’t end up binge reading them.

But sometimes, that plan backfires.

That’s how i ended uup reading “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte. I started it by thinking I would hate it, and ended up loving it instead.

Book Discussion Challenge Day 8-Foreign Language

Thanks to plurilinguismo.tumblr.com I have a folder full of books in Italian to read, but for some reason I’m nervous about reading them-probably because I’m scared I won’t be able to. I have to remind myself that I didn’t read an age-appropriate reading level book in Hebrew until I had been learning Hebrew for three years and living in Israel for one.

I do read comics on Webtoons Translate and follow a few Italian quote/comic blogs on Tumblr.

If you have/are learning a foreign language what is the first full book you finished in that language and/or what book do you want to read in that language?

Book Discussion Challenge | December 6 | Faith

If I had to choose a favorite book I would spend days, weeks, and years agonizing over it and would probably come to the conclusion that this is it.  Life of Pi by Yann Martel hits me in the heart every time I read it.  One of the things I love is how it talks about the universality of faith and how it ties faith to storytelling.  I’m being real when I say that if I didn’t already believe in God, this book would probably convince me (and not necessarily to believe in specifically a “Christian” God - Hinduism and Islam are the other two religions discussed).  Likewise, if I, for some unimaginable reason, hated storytelling and didn’t think there was any “point” to making something up, this book would convince me otherwise.  Ugh, my heart hurts a little bit just thinking about this book.

Book Discussion Challenge - Day 6: Faith

Whoops, I totally forgot about the December Book Discussion Challenge until now! I’ll just start on day 6. Today’s prompt is ‘faith’.

When I hear ‘faith’ I immediately think of my Jewishness. While I’m not religious, Jewishness and Judaism as a culture is very important to me and a big part of my identity, and I love to read about it. So here’s some of my collection of books on the subject of Judaism and Jewishness:

A Mercy

Book Discussion Challenge | December 5 | Confusion

So, I read A Mercy by Toni Morrison a couple of months and spent about ½ of the book being super confused.  I think it was because I was tossed into a story with multiple points of view and little indication of whose viewpoint is whose.  Honestly, it wasn’t until the middle of the book that I realized that the most unique voice (the one the book starts with) is Florens.  In the end, I ended up enjoying the book, buuuut I’m sort of afraid to read more of Morrison’s works if that is her usual narrative style.  Has anyone else read other Toni Morrison books and have any insight on what might be a good second read that is significantly less confusing?

1. Books with mirrors often involve time travelling. What is your favorite time travelling book?

2. In Snow White the Evil Queen’s mirror tells her that Snow White is prettier than her, causing her to command Snow White to be killed. Who is your favorite Evil Queen character?

3. In Harry Potter the Mirror of Erised shows you your greatest desire and can cause pain and being in a rut in your life if you think about what you saw for too long. Name a book where someone/something who appears to be good turns out to be bad. Don’t name the character/item!

4. A mirror reflects whatever it is facing but backwards (your right arm looks like it’s the left arm etc.). Name two books that at first seemed similar but turned out to be very different.
