The time someone tried to attack me at work
Soo.. Story time. I currently work at a bookies. It’s not my ideal job because it’s like working in retailx100 in terms of what you have deal with when it comes to customers, however at the time I was(and still am) a poor uni student who desperately needed a job in order to pay her rent and this job was very easy to get.
A few months ago I’m lone working on a Friday night. Usually stores would try to avoid that as there is a fair amount of abuse that cones with working in a bookies, particularly from the ‘old-fashioned’ AKA sexist customers who do not particularly like being told no by a short female cashier, but unfortunately we were short staffed and my manager, who was supposed to be working with me, got called away last minute to cover another store.
So I’m working alone in this store, and this customer walks up. At first I don’t notice anything unusual. He was fairly polite and asked for £50 to be remoted into one of the gaming machines from his card. I notice then that he had a wound on his finger that was bleeding, but it didn't seem to bother him and it certainly wasn’t the weirdest thing I’ve seen while working there, so I ignore it and remote his money on to the machine. He goes over to the machine and spends it all in about 10 minutes and then returns to the counter to complain that I only put £40 into his machine. Now I knew that I put £50 in, so I explained that he probably spent it by accident(the machine has a function where it transfers the money into cash out credit if you put a certain amount in to check if you really want to spend it as a sort of extra step to let people aware if they are gambling too much, and so it would have transferred it to emergency credit and then he would have had to confirm that he wanted the money or to cash it out), but the man insisted that I didn’t put it on the machine. At this point, I begin to realise that the man is probably high. His behaviour was becoming increasingly high, he kept twitch his head and sniffing, and his sentences were worded weirdly and didn't seem to make 100% sense. I wrote a report stating my suspicions and that the man would be asked to leave after I sorted this situation.
I look through the back office which has an account of the gaming history but the machines had glitched earlier in the day and I couldn’t see anything past noon. I call my manager in the other store and she informs me that this customer comes in regularly to try and claim money, and to tell him to come back either the next day or the day after and she would deal with him. At this point I’ve also called the gaming machine company and they said they would call me back and let me know if there was really a mistake or not.
So I hang up the phone, tell the man that there is nothing I could do for him today, but if he came back the next day the issue would be resolved. That’s when things took a turn. The man got very angry and refused to leave and started to shout at me that I was robbing him. I stood my ground and I told him there was nothing I could do and he needed to leave as he was now trespassing. The man looks at me and says “I’m going to knock your teeth in” and tries to jump over the counter. Luckily for me, the counter was high for that exact reason to prevent people jumping over them and he failed so he instead reached over the counter to knock over my PC and the back office. I immediately picked up the phone to call my manger in the other store and he tries to rip out the phone cord over the counter but fails. I get through to manager and tell her what has happened, that this man tried to jump over the counter to attack me, that he punched over the computer, that he tried to rip out the phone, all while this man is shouting in the background. She freaks out and tells me to push the panic alarm(I know, duh) and that security would be alerted. I the say out loud “Okay, security on it’s way” in the hopes that the man would leave. He didn’t.
I hang up the phone and push the panic alarm. An agonisingly long time passes until security responds through the speaker, meanwhile the man has continued to threaten me, trying continuously to jump over the counter and has punched my pc over so many times that I didn’t even bother picking it back up again. I explain the situation again to security and thy inform me that they’ve notified the police and that they’re on the way and to sit tight. I then spend the next period of time trying not to interact with the man in order to not antagonise hime while he continues to threaten me with phrases such as “Is your job really worth all this?” and very Liam Neeson like I remember him saying “You won’t remember me, you won’t remember my voice, you won’t remember my face, but one day I’m going to find you and take you down with me.”
At one point the man demands that I make him a coffee to ‘calm him down’, and I refuse, reminding him that I had already told him to leave. Eventually, the man figures out that he could climb onto the counter by climbing up the hot water machine by the counter and gets on the counter. For the first time, I was actually pretty terrified that the man was going to assault me and I finally lost my composure, shouting at the man “GET THE FUCK OFF THE COUNTER AND TO GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY STORE.” The man just stared at me, but fortunately a regular customer, who I’ll call Steve, re-entered the store and told the man that he should leave as we have him on CCTV and that he had called the police. The man tried to claim that he wasn’t doing anything wrong, and was ‘just sitting there’ and I took the opportunity to move the money from the till away from the counter in case he tried to snatch and grab. Steve then went ‘Just give him the money so he’ll leave’ and I said no. The man then jumped of the counter. He told me that he was going to Boots and he would be back, but then stayed for a further five minutes. As soon as he did leave, I magnet locked the closest door and walked to lock the far entrance to the store, when Steve popped in to tell me which direction the man had left. I told him that I was locking the door and he left. I locked the door and walked back behind the counter where i let security know that he left and which direction he went. Security then stopped speaking to me through the speakers. Less than five minutes later the man was back, and trying the break out the door. Once again, I was terrified, I realised that if the man did manage to break down the door, he would probably then be strong enough and angry enough to come in and beat me to death. I pressed the panic alarm again, but there was no response this time. I pressed the other one, still no response, in the end they never did respond. Instead I called my manager again and told her that he was trying to break down the door. She was still panicking and let me know that her cashier at the other shop was currently driving down from the other store so he could close the shop for me after the police show up and to give me a lift home. After a few minutes, the man gives up and sits on the doorstep, which meant he was still there when the police did eventually show up where they originally arrested him for assaulting me and assaulting a police officer. Unfortunately he got away with only monitored community service and I have seen him many times since then. I’m pretty sure he lives pretty close to me because I’ve seen him opposite my house, which is not something I’m too happy about.
