The reason for Tony's appearance is soon revealed as Abra, another child with supernatural abilities but those that are terrifyingly strong. Abra finds Dan via a telepathic communication similar to greeting neighbours in a new address. She is destined to be Dan's protégé and in many ways his redemption. However, someone else wants Abra for their own devices. A motley crew of monsters that look like harmless humans. Demons that torture & kill children like Abra, sucking out their life force as they scream in pain for nourishment. They are powerful with abilities of their own and immense wealth, they have been around since the time of wagon carts and perhaps even before. Now that they have become aware of Abra and her phenomenal abilities, they crave her essence like junkies. But Dan & Abra know they're coming, and they do not intend to go quietly or go at all. What we love about the book is the smooth shift from the literal monsters of The Shining to the more lifelike scares of adulthood. From drinking, to identity crisis, to the metaphor of those in power sucking away individualistic abilities.
