Strength and Simplicity

Unlike many Victorian houses, where ponderous architectural details pose serious competition to everything else in the rooms, this 1880 San Antonio dwelling offers a relatively clean, if not exactly blank, slate. The owner’s collection includes hundreds of books on subjects as diverse as sailing in the tropics to Texas Hill Country history.

Towering banks of bookcases are easily accommodated in the library, where a trestle table is piled high with favorite volumes. In front, eighteenth-century Windsor chair flank a table of glass and chrome, and a Philip Guston drawing stands in the window behind.
