#bannedbooksweek | I cannot imagine not reading Harry Potter. I read it as a first-time mama holding my own baby boy in my arms. Perhaps this is why I have such an overwhelming love for the series. - 📚. Throughout the U.S., the entire series is banned in different counties and school districts because of the use of witchcraft. In a recent @nytimes article, “Harry Potter and the Poorly-Read Exorcists”, the reporter mentions a priest ordering the series removed from the parish library after “he had ‘consulted several exorcists, both in the United States and in Rome,’ and had been assured that the ‘curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.’” - 📚. Once I stopped my eye rolls and laughter, I realized that this poor man and his parish will never know the real story because of their fear of witchcraft. It’s a story about surviving impossible odds. It showcases the strength of a mother’s love. It shows us that friendship, true-blue friendship, survives all the hurdles that life and time throws at it. It’s a story of an orphaned boy who finds in himself the strength to carry on. - 📚. Pretty Christian themes in my book. Or perhaps, better yet, very universal themes. - 📚. I envy all the mamas who pick up the series to read to their kiddos for the very first time. I envy all the school reports, dioramas and birthday party themes you’ll help supervise and create. True magic is ahead for all of you. - 📚. Meanwhile, I get to sit back with all my memories of my husband begging me to go to sleep while our baby slept.
