i’m starting a patreon

hey everyone!

so, i’ve been thinking about this for a while, and i finally decided to open a patreon.

it’s a big and scary step for me, but i’m doing it out of both love for writing and to be completely transparent, necessity.

writing takes a lot. time, energy, research (sometimes), hours spent drafting and reworking things. i love doing it. i really do. but the truth is, i've hit a very difficult point in my life and that is why i've decided to ask for some help

this doesn’t mean everything i write is going behind a paywall. i’ll still be here, still sharing stories here in hannieween

I don’t know what to fucking say anymore.

I’m tired. I’m hurt. I’m sad. And angry, like, really FUCKING angry.

They were children, they were only kids. And they found 215 of their corpses buried near those goddamn schools. It shouldn’t even be called a school.

As an indigenous person, this is fucking heartbreaking. But it’s not like it’s new. Shit like this has been happening and will continue happen unless we do something about it.

We can’t keep letting shit like this slide. That was only one school where they found those kids. Imagine how many more have mass graves on the premises. This isn’t just “a dark chapter in our country’s history” this was and still is the whole fucking book. There are people in my community who have lived through the horrors of residential schools and many more that live with the trauma it brought.

LET ME CLARIFY AND SAY THAT I AM ALSO VERY WORRIED AND UPSET ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON WITH ORANGE PEEL AND HIS POLITICAL BOYFRIEND MR. TWITTER TOO!! I HATE WHAT THEY DID AND I’M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE US’ FUTURE!!! I JUST DO NOT HAVE THE ENERGY TO SEE DISCUSSIONS OF IT AND IT AFFECTS MY MENTAL HEALTH!!

This goes for everything political though. Be it about freeing 🇵🇸, 🇺🇦, etc (which I fully support as well), PLEASE please tag your posts with the appropriate tags (it doesn’t have to be #\politics or anything like that if you don’t want it to be. I know a lot of this stuff isn’t just political but human lives at stake).

I know that this is a thing for a lot of other people too. I am very much worried for and in support of a lot of these movements and I have a LOT of feelings about them! The thing is, a lot of the time I can’t handle thinking about it or I’m already actively seeking comfort when I’m on here and seeing this stuff actively makes me spiral or feel even worse. I do what I can in support of these things but I’m not in the space where I can handle thinking about it most of the time.

I am ALL FOR curating your own space online, and I feel like when people try to avoid tags or create new ones to evade people from ignoring these issues, it greatly affects people who can’t handle them or are actively using their social media space to escape current events and reality. I DO NOT want to ignore what is happening in our current world, I wholeheartedly agree it shouldn’t be ignored. Current events are important to me, but you have to understand that not properly tagging these things is the same as not properly tagging nsft, gore, or other triggering topics so that people cannot block them.

I’m not saying ya’ll are doing this on purpose either, but with how much political content I unwillingly see on my dash even though I have went great lengths to block it from my dash, I know it’s becoming an issue.

Please, I beg of you, respect my view on this. I mean well, and I want people to be able to freely talk about these things as much as the next guy, but I want to not have to worry about whether or not I will spiral again next time I open tumblr to look at comforting stuff.

just a friendly PSA for any burgeoning commission artists out here:

don't try to cover up the fact that you're after a commission. it makes you look like a bot and/or a scammer and it'll harm your prospects forever, because one thing that fic writers are very very good at is yapping, and we will tell every fic writer we know to look out for you.

there is nothing wrong with asking to make art for a commission. but be upfront about it. don't hide it until you've got someone talking to you about art, because once they realise you're just after money, you'll lose them.

this just happened to me and to one of my friends. we were approached on AO3 by a commenter asking to draw art for our fics, and when we agreed to discuss further on another platform, we were told well into the conversation that the artist was after a commission. this was not discussed or mentioned beforehand, nor was it even hinted at until the artist in question had us talking on another platform about working together. we were both offered "payment plans" for these commissions. now I don't know if this person is a scammer or a bot or something worse, but it absolutely crushed us both. the dream for a lot of fic writers is to have someone love our work enough to make art of it. to get so close to that and then realise that they don't actually care about the work, just the money they could make from us, is heartbreaking.

I'm not going to post the names publicly in case this artist is genuine and just misguided, but if anyone wants to know the red flags that we caught, feel free to DM me.

fic writers, I recommend making it known whether or not you can afford commissioned art.

and to this artist, in case you're here and reading this: reconsider your sales pitch. if you need help to market yourself and your art more effectively, I'm open to helping you with that. but please, for the sake of your reputation and career, please stop trying to ambush fic writers with commission requests. it's not effective, and it only serves to make you look bad in the long run.
