I mean, real talk?

The ideas that “BoP2020 erasing Barbara Gordon from the team’s origin movie when she’s the one who spearheaded the entire operation is suspect as all hell on several fronts” and “BoP2020 was a well put-together and fun movie that more than earned its share of kudos” are two thoughts that can and should coexist when approaching this movie.

The same as “Including Cass for the first time in a Big Budget Movie does wonders for Name Recognition and for introducing many First-Time viewers/readers to her” and “this character is Cassandra Cain in name only and that will likely detract enjoyment for many fans who adore her in the comics”.

It’s not a black and white issue, it’s a grey-zone. I’d almost be tempted to label it as a monkey’s paw in a way too? Or at the very least like a genie wish? On one hand you get what amounts to a REALLY FUN movie that’s by all means pretty well constructed! It’s groundbreaking in the teamwork that’s behind it (being mostly women-led and driven and that SHOWING in everything from the scripting to framing) but I won’t be surprised to find out if its not up for too many awards come Oscar season (i mean just how many superhero movies really make it to that if they dont have the financial backing for it, yknow?) it’s got its own set of flaws and that’s very much worth talking about (not putting as much as we probably Could/Should Have into characters outside of Harley, the gang all meeting in the 3rd act when we probably could have benefitted from more interactions beforehand/esp after, those are my own personal nitpicks but im sure others have theirs) BUT, thats all to say that it’s all relative.

im personally still in awe that this movie was made at all and that it did and continues to make me feel so seen and heard in a lot of little ways. and while Babs and Cass’ treatment in light of this movie will always leave a bittersweet aftertaste for me, the pros end up outweighing the cons for me. but that def doesn’t mean we ignore those cons.

I have come to the conclusion that Birds of Prey (2020) is the balance that is finally being restored from when I was Subjected to Birds of Prey (2002) and slowly began to realize just How Gay I really am but had to suffer through a Bad™ show for it.

Something that my friend mentioned while walking out of the theater that’s hard to explain fully but I’ll try:

Women use ‘fuck’ a little differently than men do.

It’s usually something born out of frustration rather than anger. It’s something used very purposefully to emphasize for humorous or emotional effect. It’s something that’s noticed and taken note of and outright admonished if used in inappropriate settings.

(But usually it doesn’t go that far in the first place.)

And somehow. Birds of Prey showed all of that.

Originally, I did kind of wish they’d gone a PG-13 route to expand the audience and reach wider demographics. But upon viewing, it’s so much better that they didn’t.

Because they REALLY could NOT have made this movie without every last little f-bomb to punctuate it along the way.

Woke up this morning thinking abt how BoP20 let Helena dress to the nines like she was going into combat zones and simultaneously let Harley do an impractical shoe change mid-battle bc they’re both valid power fantasies that can exist simultaneously for femme ppl and I LOVE THAT SHIT

Everyone’s mentioned how Harley got to psychoanalyze the rest of the cast at almost every turn but NO ONES talked about how QUICKLY she read Cass’ fear and anxiety at realizing that there was a whole ARMY of men after HER and expertly deflected that into a rallying cry for the Birds.

Here was a kid she’d grown admittedly attached to, a kid that was in danger and fearing for her life, and she did what she does best; using her words and the skills she’s picked up as a psychologist to turn the situation around and look at it from a new angle.

Because Sionis only knew for sure that Dinah and Harley were present at the funhouse. Renee and Helena could’ve walked without much trouble. Hell, they all could’ve walked away really or given the kid up.

But Harley knew they weren’t those kind of women. And deep down, despite the threat she gave to Cass at the supermarket earlier, neither is she.
