I warned you about AI – Terminator director

Canadian film director James Cameron has said his 1984 sci-fi blockbuster ‘The Terminator’ should have served as a warning about the dangers of AI, and that the “weaponization” of the emerging tech could have disastrous consequences.

Speaking to CTV News for an interview on Tuesday, the award-winning director was asked whether he believes artificial intelligence could someday bring “the extinction of humanity,” a fear raised even by some industry leaders.

“I absolutely share their concern. I warned you guys in 1984 and you didn't listen,” he said, referring to his film ‘The Terminator,’ which revolves around a cybernetic assassin created by an intelligent supercomputer known as Skynet.   

Cameron went on to warn that “the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger,” adding “I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI. And if we don't build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it'll escalate.”

In the event artificial intelligence is deployed on the battlefield, computers may move so quickly that “humans can no longer intercede,” the director said, arguing such technology would leave no time for peace talks or an armistice.

“When you’re dealing with a potential of it escalating to nuclear warfare, deescalation is the name of the game. Having that pause, that time out – but will they do that? The AIs will not,” Cameron continued.

The famed filmmaker has issued similar warnings in the past, saying that while AI “can be pretty great,” it could also “literally be the end of the world.” He even went as far as to say that “an AI could have taken over the world and already be manipulating it but we just don't know,” speculating that sentient computers “would have total control over all the media and everything.”

Though the tech has yet to achieve world domination, some leading experts have also sounded alarms about artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, AI giants including OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind joined academics, lawmakers and entrepreneurs to issue a statement calling to mitigate “the risk of extinction from AI,” saying it should be “a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

A similar open letter published last March urged for a six-month pause on the training of powerful AI systems, saying they “should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.” Signed by more than 1,000 experts and executives – including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak – the statement warned that AI could pose “profound risks to society and humanity.”

Rental crisis gets farcical as Melbourne family advertise tent for rent in lounge for $350 a week

Australia’s out-of-control rental market has come under fire once again with an extraordinary video of a tent being rented out in a family’s living room.

The farcical situation was brought to light by purchasing agent Ella Cas, who posted a message video on TikTok about it and said it was “a sign of the times.”

‘Not really.  You can now rent a tent in South Melbourne for $350 a week,” Ms Cas said in the viral clip, which has been shared, liked and commented thousands of times.

Reasonably enough, the rental ad for the interesting accommodation begins with ‘Hello guys, we’re looking for a roommate to share our beautiful house.’

It further reads: ‘Room for rent, large bathroom is yours.  Just looking for single, one person for room, thank you.’

The reason they are only looking for one person is, of course, because they will be living in a tent in the family’s living room, where space is already scarce.

The ad then says the property is in South Melbourne and is a ‘family home’.

‘Me and my husband and two girls live in an apartment, so we’re looking for someone who doesn’t mind living with children.’

Ms. Cas’s video offered what she called “a preview of the location where your tent will be – the living room of a family’s apartment.”

“Now they have two kids, and to sweeten the deal, you get your own bathroom,” she added.

The buyer’s agent then discussed the serious issues beyond the inherent humor of the situation.

“This is a very sad indication of the environment we’re in,” she said.  “I assume the family bought the apartment when interest rates were lower.

And now that interest rates have risen, their mortgage payments are higher, and to help with that, they’re renting out their living rooms.

‘And how do you make a living room private other than with a tent?’

Ms Cas said the desperate situation ‘shows how difficult it is to be an Australian homeowner right now and pay a mortgage with these high interest rates’.

Some commenters were so surprised by the ad that they didn’t believe it was real, but another pointed out that the ad was still on flatmates.com.

The ad gave others ideas on how to make money from their own properties.

“I could rent out my driveway to a caravan, backyard to tents, double bunks in my 4 bedrooms,” one wrote.

Another said they would live in their two-person tent and rent the second room in it.

Others questioned whether the lease proposal was lawful.  ‘How is this legal?  I pay an additional $26 (on top of the $350 asking price) for a one-bedroom apartment 15 minutes from the city.  What a tear!’

The best comment of all, however, came from the person who simply wrote, “I just signed the lease.”

First-ever political rally in Minecraft draws 12,000, then crashes

The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (which is often described as neither liberal, democratic or a party) held a campaign rally in Minecraft, one so successful it crashed the server. More than 12,000 people apparently turned up (in Minecraft), where they enjoyed setting off fireworks, looking at an enormous, blocky bust of late party founder Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and reading error messages as the server collapsed. Despite this, the world’s first political rally was considered a rousing success.

Italy has become the first Western country to block advanced chatbot ChatGPT.

The Italian data-protection authority said there were privacy concerns relating to the model, which was created by US start-up OpenAI and is backed by Microsoft.

The regulator said it would ban and investigate OpenAI "with immediate effect".

OpenAI told the BBC it complied with privacy laws.

Millions of people have used ChatGPT since it launched in November 2022.

It can answer questions using natural, human-like language and it can also mimic other writing styles, using the internet as it was in 2021 as its database.

Microsoft has spent billions of dollars on it and it was added to Bing last month.

It has also said that it will embed a version of the technology in its Office apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

There have been concerns over the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), including its threat to jobs and the spreading of misinformation and bias.

Earlier this week key figures in tech, including Elon Musk, called for these types of AI systems to be suspended amid fears the race to develop them was out of control.

The Italian watchdog said that not only would it block OpenAI's chatbot but it would also investigate whether it complied with General Data Protection Regulation.

GDPR governs the way in which we can use, process and store personal data.

The watchdog said on 20 March that the app had experienced a data breach involving user conversations and payment information.

It said there was no legal basis to justify "the mass collection and storage of personal data for the purpose of 'training' the algorithms underlying the operation of the platform".

It also said that since there was no way to verify the age of users, the app "exposes minors to absolutely unsuitable answers compared to their degree of development and awareness".

Bard, Google's rival artificial-intelligence chatbot, is now available, but only to specific users over the age of 18 - because of those same concerns.

The Italian data-protection authority said OpenAI had 20 days to say how it would address the watchdog's concerns, under penalty of a fine of €20 million ($21.7m) or up to 4% of annual revenues.

Elsewhere, the Irish data protection commission told the BBC it is following up with the Italian regulator to understand the basis for their action and "will coordinate with all EU data protection authorities" in connection to the ban.

The Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's independent data regulator, told the BBC it would "support" developments in AI but that it was also ready to "challenge non-compliance" with data protection laws.

Dan Morgan, from cybersecurity ratings provider SecurityScorecard said the ban shows the importance of regulatory compliance for companies operating in Europe.

"Businesses must prioritise the protection of personal data and comply with the stringent data protection regulations set by the EU - compliance with regulations is not an optional extra."

'Not sufficiently regulated'

Consumer advocacy group BEUC also called on EU and national authorities - including data-protection watchdogs - to investigate ChatGPT and similar chatbots, following the filing of a complaint in the US.

Although the EU is currently working on the world's first legislation on AI, BEUC's concern is that it would take years before the AI Act could take effect, leaving consumers at risk of harm from a technology that is not sufficiently regulated.

Ursula Pachl, deputy director general of BEUC, warned that society was "currently not protected enough from the harm" that AI can cause.

"There are serious concerns growing about how ChatGPT and similar chatbots might deceive and manipulate people. These AI systems need greater public scrutiny, and public authorities must reassert control over them," she said.

ChatGPT is already blocked in a number of countries, including China, Iran, North Korea and Russia.

OpenAI told the BBC that it had disabled ChatGPT for users in Italy at the request of the Italian data protection regulator, called the Garante:

"We are committed to protecting people's privacy and we believe we comply with GDPR and other privacy laws", it wrote.

The organisation said it worked to reduce personal data in training AI systems like ChatGPT because it wanted its AI systems to "learn about the world, not about private individuals".

"We also believe that AI regulation is necessary — so we look forward to working closely with the Garante and educating them on how our systems are built and used", it added

OpenAI said it looked forward to making ChatGPT available in Italy again "soon".
