The problem with GamerGate is that you do have a part of the movement that is looking for good things. They want to be sure that when people write articles about video games, that people use to decide on whether or not to purchase that game, are writing it with integrity. They want to know if there is a personal relationship, or a monetary relationship, between the writer and the creator of the game. And that is a very valid critisism and demand.
However the impetus of the whole movement was started when an ex boyfriend of Zoe Quinn’s aired completely private and personal information about her. This brought all kinds of attacks against Zoe. Doxxing, threats, insults, finding and then spreading pictures she had taken all over the place, etc. Her boyfriend knew that the vocal anti PC, anti feminist groups already hated her because of Depression Quest and how she spoke out about the kind of vitriolic atmosphere that women in the games industry have to deal with. He did this knowing that this explosion against her would happen.
There are plenty of logs and screenshots of 4chan chat rooms planning and coordinating the attacks, the way to attack, the way to try and spin it to make it seem like it isn’t about Zoe even though it was, to make it seem like they are the real heroes and the ones that are for equality. It was all a sham and a lie perpetuated by people that knew it was a lie and who got a kick out of it, and by people that didn’t want to believe that it was a lie or that were just ignorant of where it started.
Those who are championing games journalism/press/industry transparency at the same time as championing a zero tolerance of harassment of anyone should open their eyes and realize that the foundation of their movement is on the burning and pissed on remains of any kind of moral high group they may be trying to reach right now. It would be better if they started a separate movement, devoid of the assholes who run rife within the #GamerGate tag who do nothing but prove that there is no real focus on the gaming industry other than requiring it to stay the same way and never change even though there are plenty of ways it can change for the better. All because SJW feminist libtards are these terrible things that are allegedly trying to ruin video games.
I mean, I am looking at a picture right now, with the Vivian James cartoon character in the bottom left corner, talking about how GamerGate has nothing to do with race, gender or orientation. That no one should ever be harassed, threatened or have their private information leaked.
But in the same graphic they say that video games should ONLY be judged on their structural or mechanical merits. That’s it. No social aspect. No cultural aspect. As long as the gameplay is good and the graphics aren’t messed up apparently everything is A-OK. Based on that description, you could make the best playable FPS out there, amazing controls, graphics, smooth gameplay, but it is about you being a Muslim gunning down waves of women and children all in the name of Islam. Nothing wrong with that, right?
It says that video games should not be politicized to further and agenda, and that their creators should not be silenced or pressured to change against their will. Because the people who are the loudest and most vocal, who have always been the loudest and most vocal, are obviously not the people that are pounding the drums in the #GamerGate tag. No, not at all. They are all silenced everywhere. Yup yup.
It says that reviewers should not use their political stance to review games. Critics. Being told what they can and cannot call out. Look up above. Look at what I just wrote in the last paragraph about making sure no one is being silenced. Now look at the beginning of this paragraph again. No inconsistency there eh? Silence the critics, let us have our freedom of speech.
Oh, by the way. If you do use the “freedom of speech” argument, need I remind you that freedom of speech is a legal thing. You are allowed to say whatever you want as long as you are not insiting violence or putting people in danger and the government is not allowed to do anything to you. Freedom of speech does NOT protect you from criticism or people calling you on your offensive material.
I feel bad for those in the #GamerGate tag that are getting lumped in with all the angry vitriolic people. You want transparency in the reviews you read. That is a good thing. But be careful who you associate with.
Boredy here has some fabulous advice for the social justice-inclined side of Tumblr. Boredy, it's a real shame that you don't have more subscribers, because you are among the most level-headed social justice advocates and feminists that I have ever encountered. Hopefully, I boost your follower count with my shout out to you!
