Boris - Vanilla
I’d like to have a go at building this pedal, but I can’t find a schematic for it, or very much detail about it. I grabbed this screen shot off YouTube. It’s the WATAFUZZ by MASF made for Wata from boris. If somebody could recommend a fuzz that sounds similar to this, where the schematics are more easily available then I’d be grateful. As far as I know you can’t buy these any more. looks like it could be a Big Muff style fuzz, I count 4 transistors and two pairs of Germanium diodes. That transistor in the middle could potentially be Germanium as well. It’s also possible those two transistors on the left are some sort of Fuzz Face circuit. I’m also thinking about building some of wata’s other pedals that she uses, maybe the Marshall Drivemaster, Boss DS-1, Zvex Supa Dupa, or the Dwarfcraft Shiva Fuzz.

Holy shitballs, new Boris! I haven't even finished the album, but all I want to do it keep turning it up. If there's one band I like just listening to obnoxiously loud, it's Boris. It never seems to get to that grating point that makes your ears kinda prickle, it's just like a big fucking heavy blanket of sound that keeps getting comfier.
This album already feels quite...diverse, but if there's one word I can find so far it's that it sounds so bloody elegant.
Everyone, listen to this and turn your speakers to 11!

Boris: Noise
New music up on NPR First Listen this week. Don’t know who this clown Sam Smith is, but using the ol’ “judging a book by it’s cover” method, I will not be reading that book.
ANYWAY. There are two really great albums that I’ve been really excited about streaming now. First up, Boris “Noise” and its a shredfest out the gate. But in natural Boris fashion, they explore their shoegaze, ambient, experiemental, doom, roots blah blah blah. That’s fine, it’s just painful putting into words how calculated the display of influence is. Spread out for 58 minutes for all of the world to see. … After a few sour words, I still love Boris, and DO appreciate their ability to seemlessly transition into new forms of music — from track to track, album to album.
The new Meridian Brothers is streaming as well. “Salvadora Robot”. For those who don’t know, Meridian Brothers is Elbis Alvarrez, and there are no actual Brothers or Meridians on this recording. Alvarrez is at the forefront of an unnamed progressive Pan-South-American movement that is reviving the familiar sounds of cumbia, salsa, bossa, and pumping out some high-quality authentic art. Meridian Brothers’ sounds comes from a place not dissimilar in spirit from the funk/soul revivalists at Daptone, or the Afro-Funk enthusiasts in bands like Antibalas or Seun Kuti. However, I can’t help but imagine that there’s a certain “fuck it” quality to what Alvarrez is doing. Imagine Silver Apples came out of the Colombian circus. Yeah, real weird. Real fun. For more music in the same general camp, the New York record label & distro Names You Can Trust. I’ve purchased Meridian Bros stuff from them in the past, along with other oddball Latin records.
I also recommend the new Quantic record. A little more club ready than the Meridian Bros, but the two have quite a bit in common. Check out the project Ondatrópica, both Elbis Alvarrez and Will "Quantic" Holland, along with Mario Galeamo, collaborated on the sole album released in 2012.
