'Around 4 million years ago. The Zanclean stage of the Pliocene epoch. Near what is now Bayview, North Carolina.
A young, unexperienced Borophagus dudleyi lumbers along a coastal marsh, but where there's one dog, there's bound to be more. Its presence alarms a nearby Kyptoceras amatorum, who signals to his herd that danger approaches, stomping his hoof into the soil noisily, causing them to retreat into woodlands in response.
This loud noise causes a commotion, flushing a spring of Spatula discors. The panic has made the dog's presence evident to all nearby creatures, ruining whatever chance or plan he had to obtain a meal.'
