will the doctor and zepheera ever meet the rest of the sprites like Rischa and scar and vel?

@neonthewrite and I haven't yet written those interactions in Borrowed Magic, but it would be inevitable that they'd take Bowman home for visits eventually. (Especially since it was sort of an accident that he ended up with them in the first place ^^; ) The Doctor and Zepheera would of course be interested in checking out Wellwood properly, and meet such important members of the community!

I jotted down a small prompt set in such a scenario called The Flight Home for G/T July '22; it doesn't go too deep into explorations of Wellwood or meaningful interactions since I wrote it without Neon and wanted to focus more on the slight scale difference between her sprites and my borrower. I had fun with it, and so far it's the one sneak peek into a Wellwood visit in the future.

You do remind me, though...

Way back when, Neon and I did write a short of a scenario in which Doc lands himself near Wellwood and doesn't run into Bowman first. No Zepheera around in that one to be a buffer between him and the new smols, either, so the first meetings are a bit different than in Borrowed Magic. Since they're not really related, maybe we'll post that short after the current story wraps up!

"Oh, oh no," Ara stammered out. She had fallen back in surprise and now sat with her hands over her eyes. Ralis had dropped to the ground and curled up with his wings stretched overhead. Looking like a plant wouldn't help in this situation, but he couldn't do anything else.

Rischa looked back at the man, though she couldn't retreat like the others. For some reason, her feet were frozen where they were.

“Oh!” The Doctor’s knee-jerk reaction was a wide grin at the sight of his discovery. People. Tiny little winged people hiding in a fern in the middle of the forest!

Now this was more like it!

Borrowed Magic: Lost in Flight

There's something out of place in Wellwood forest, and a mismatched pair of someones chasing after it.

Bowman Leafwing wouldn't be the patrolsprite he is if he didn't investigate. It's hardly his fault that it leads to a much bigger adventure than he anticipated!

How could he plan ahead for travel through time and space?

If you don't, I announced a good while back we don't have to talk about how long ago that this is from the first, and as yet only, collaborative AU of BTaS called Borrowed Magic!

This was actually my first shot at writing collaboratively, which I've done quite a bit of since then with my good friends. My cowriter for Borrowed Magic, @neonthewrite, lent me her sprite guy to throw at my borrower and Time Lord to see if they stuck. This was huge for me, since one of my formative internet g/t experiences was reading Bowman of Wellwood back when it was still posted on DA, before she got it properly published. Needless to say, being friends and writing buddies with her was and still is a huge honor!

Anyway, enough of my gushing! I'm here to officially say that this is finally going to start posting! The first story is titled Lost in Flight, and it'll go up on Archive of our Own and post on Thursdays at 5pm central time, starting next week on October 5th!

11. Mini giant

AU: Borrowed Magic; an as yet unposted crossover with @neonthewrite as a mashup of her wonderful universe of sprites in nature and my silly Doctor Who fic. A bit of a kick in the pants to myself to get my shit together lol Her scale for the sprites is slightly different from my scale for borrowers, and that leads to some fun gt shenanigans.

The air was alive with the scent of pine needles, the sound of leaves rustling in the canopy overhead. For Zepheera, this was far from an ordinary walk through the forest, and for once that didn't mean a different planet. This was Earth, the very planet where she was born.

This was Wellwood, home of the wood sprites.

Hearing about the place and actually seeing it in person were two vastly different things. Walking on the ground, Zepheera could stare up at the looming trees dotted with tiny houses grown right into the wood. Staircases bloomed around the trunks in a similar fashion; despite the winged nature of Wellwood's denizens, some of them still used their legs in what the borrower in their company would call the normal way.

What really gave Zepheera pause was the scale of it all. At four and a half inches tall, an average height for a borrower woman, she was more than accustomed to most everything on the planet and in the greater universe being quite massive compared to her. This time, things were scaled just slightly smaller than she was used to.

It probably shouldn't have surprised her. After all, she was about a head taller than her friend Bowman, who often claimed to be tall for a sprite at around four inches. He was the only sprite she and the Doctor knew when he accidentally joined their travels through time and space in the Tardis. Zepheera could easily dismiss it when Bowman would lump her in with the human sized Time Lord in his grumpy mutterings about "blasted giants".

Now there was absolutely no room for denial. More and more sprites glided down on leaflike wings to the forest floor, likely curious about and cautious toward the new arrivals to Wellwood in equal measure. The young ones, mostly flightless due to their wings having yet to fully uncurl from buds along their backs, were quite openly curious and approached Zepheera with excitement. They were positively teeny next to her, even for children! And Zepheera found that she did indeed stand a head taller than some of the tallest adult sprites she saw.

For once in her life, Zepheera did feel like a blasted giant.

"And anyways, I was right!" he asserted. "Here you are, flying around in one piece, not even a nibble off you! Absolute sweetheart, she was, just a bit...hyper and distracted, that's all. Knew you could handle 'er just fine, no need to get your wings in a twist."

"Wings in a- Pray to a rock!" Bowman blurted, irate in spite of how well the situation had gone.

The Doctor simply smiled at her. "It's alright," he said softly, a phrase the creature was quickly becoming familiar with. With slow, careful movements, he approached her with a gentle hand extended for her to sniff. Neither his scent or his demeanor raised any major red flags for the creature, so she relaxed a hair. That was all the Doctor needed. "I'm the Doctor," he introduced himself, looking the dragon straight in the eye. "And I'm gonna take you home."

Bowman's eyes widened and he actually took his eyes off the creature to twist around and look the Doctor in the face. "You're not serious," he blurted, almost demanded to be true. But there wasn't a sign of a joke in the Doctor's expression, and Bowman threw him a look that said if things weren't so dire, he'd be bopping him right on the forehead that second.
