James Freeman Clarke, Coffee Palaces, and Temperance
Unitarian minister and temperance movement leader James Freeman Clarke (1810-1888) advocated for the introduction of coffee houses to Boston, as an alternative to bars and pubs.
Today, Boston certainly does have coffee houses, but you’d have a hard time finding a coffee palace.
