As it stands right now, Bossverse doesn’t have a whole Hell of a lot of diversity when it comes to Grimm and that is a goddamn travesty. So my half asleep brain decided to start thinking about this.
Grimm, as we have defined them. Are the Creatures created by the Goddess of Opposition, Adversina in retaliation to the Goddess of the Moon, Luna’s, creation of Mankind. She took one of Luna’s Creations, enveloped it in darkness, twisted it, broke it, and reshaped it into something that exists only to destroy. This primordial Grimm earned the name Mystery by the Humans who survived it. They did not understand what it was, only that it did not sleep, it did not stop, and they were nearly wiped out because of it.
Nobody knows now what Mystery looked like. All the drawings from that time are vague at best, and no two ever look the same. Because Mystery has no definite shape. Mystery is the personification of darkness and evil and everything scary in the world.
After Mystery was created, Grimm started popping up everywhere. And as Mankind saw more of them, they needed ways to classify them. As follows:
This is fairly straight-forward. It is the most common Grimm type in the world and they are things like Beowolves, Deathstalkers, Nevermores, and they are everywhere. They are easiest to defeat as a result of people having so much more experience in dealing with them.
These Grimm make no noise when they move, even the world around them seems to quiet itself. They open their mouths to howl, or scream, or anything like that. And yet even then they are silent. But you can feel their call in your bones.
For the most part, these Grimm operate on basic animal instinct alone. They see prey, they hunt it, they kill it. They don’t usually think much beyond that. They don’t really need to.
These Grimm are slightly more rare in the world. It takes something significant to create a new Mythic-Type Grimm. Nucklavee, Banshees, Sirens, and the like. They have small little quirks that make them harder to deal with. Few normal people have ever had to deal with them, and few experienced Huntsmen can actually take them down alone.
Some of these Grimm are known to make noise. The Siren, for example is akin to a Mockingbird. It will lure unsuspecting people to their deaths, either at the hands of the Grimm itself, or by using natural things like cliffs, reefs, quicksand, or any other myriad of thing it can find.
These Grimm seem to operate on a much higher plane of thought than Animal-Type. They are willing and able to use complex tactics in order to fight off humans. It makes them far more dangerous than most people are really prepared to deal with.
Not much is known about this enigmatic Type of Grimm. It is said that they are the closest in nature to the Primordial Grimm Mystery. Nature Sprites are the most common form of these, but there are some that are powerful enough to even inhabit people. Those are referred to as Sapio Sprites. Few people have seen one and survived. Even fewer have actually been able to take one down.
These Grimm, like the Animal-Type, make no noise unless they are inhabiting a living thing. They can, if the host is particularly weak-willed, force them to speak and behave in a certain way. Some mass-murders are said to have been caused by these formidable Grimm.
Some people claim that these Grimm are smarter still than the Mythic-Type. Others insist that they are the dumbest Grimm in existence. There are arguments for both sides, as the Nature Sprites seem to act more akin to the Animal-Type when it comes to most things. Whereas Sapio Sprites seem to be able to think and function on the same level as Humanity, if not slightly higher, though the argument there is that they are only using the knowledge and processing capabilities of whoever they are inhabiting at the time.
There are only five of these known only to ancient lore and those few that know that the old tales are more than just stories. It is said that near each of the four Kingdoms, there lay a Legendary Grimm, sleeping, waiting for it’s chance to once again rise up and terrorize Humanity.
Glenn, the Dark Dragon. It is said he resides in the mountainside that Vale backs up against. When he flies, he drips a vile blackness that seeps into the very stone and corrupts it. And wherever those drops hit, a new Grimm crawls from the depths of a shadow that should not be there.
Iapetus, the Ice King. This Giant is said to reside within the deepest, most foul caves at the northern edge of the island that houses Atlas. Some of the stories of the outlaying villages suggest that he might not be asleep like Glenn, but that he simply lurks in the darkness, waiting for his chance to strike Humanity from the face of his island.
Zhengkong, the Ebon Snake. Out in the wastes near Vacuo, stories have long persisted of the earthquakes that you can feel out there. A giant snake that oozes a cruel darkness. Wherever that snake goes, Grimm pop up from his wake. He has not been seen in many centuries, and the stories like to say he is asleep. But there are some who swear that they have seen the hulking shadow of the beast, slithering across the horizon.
Ouragan, the Fell Beast. He wanders here and there, the stories say. In a labyrinth of valleys and tunnels hewn into the very rock of the mountains surrounding Mistral. Only few stories of Ouragan survive, and most suggest that he sleeps, awaiting his Mistress’ call. Though no two stories can ever agree on who this ‘Mistress’ is.
Leviathan, the Lord of the Deep. The final Legendary Grimm is told only in stories of sailors half-mad from exposure and dehydration on wrecked vessels. They speak of a hulking shadow rising from the water, blocking the sun. These stories vary wildly from place to place, but from the sheer number of them, one thing is certain. Leviathan is still very much awake, and is still active in the world.
