I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his moans echoed on this audio of a sex tape with one of my best friends' moans that I also immediately recognized on the tape. I would know the sounds he makes while having sex in death, at the end of the world.
the thing thats crazy about ray knowing immediately it was topboston in the recording isnt even that he recognized boston. cause like i joke about bostonray as if it’s some conspiracy, but given that boston and ray are both pretty casual about sex, including with friends, it’s not some surprise if they’ve hooked up and there’s plenty of other evidence in canon to support it. now ray recognizing TOP however—
I think one of the reasons TopMew feels distinct from the other two plots is that Ray/Boston & Sand/Nick as characters are so comparable: I’d argue they're foils of each other insofar as their similarities only make their differences that much more prominent.
I came into the series thinking Ray was going to be a lot more similar to Boston than he is. Still, there's an element of self-fulfilling prophecy for both of them. Ray doesn't act out with the intention of causing destruction, but he's come to expect it. Boston comes to expect it because he intends it. For Boston, I think he's starting to grapple with the question of why he intends it.
Boston is destructive but Ray is just self-destructive. I think what Boston is realizing is that his destruction is in itself a form of self-destruction. What that says about his mental health could be interesting to dive deeper into.
For Sand and Nick, their greatest similarity seems to be their capacity to form attachments. Nick's admittedly borderlines more obsessive than purely affectionate, but the fact remains that they both form bonds with people who either don't want to love them back or are too confused to love them the way they deserve. The major difference is how they react to those relationships going off the rails.
Sand retreats into himself rather than seeking more information, whereas Nick immediately jumps on the (invasive) opportunity to learn whatever he can about Boston and Top's relationship. Additionally, we see Sand telling Nick to move on repeatedly, whereas Nick clings onto his feelings for Boston much more vocally than Sand clings onto his own feelings for Ray. Sand seems to have a greater inherent understanding of what he deserves, and he is quick to tell others what they deserve too.
The reason they work so well as friends is because of this difference, because Sand levels Nick out when his feelings kick in, while Nick provides necessary encouragement to Sand not to completely give up on Ray yet.
Not sure what my main point of all this is besides to say that I find it compelling how the Ray/Boston, Sand/Nick dynamic functions narratively to highlight their core traits. It also accentuates the extreme contrasts between SandRay and BostonNick.
Okay we ready to talk about Boston and Ray? Buckle up. They have fucked eachother. Boston had or has feelings for Ray. Been getting weird vibes between them this whole show but we get a bit of interesting dialogue from exploding sun Ray here.
No we don’t get the exact words but his comment about fucking in the dark room is something very telling. I don’t think getting dicked down by Boston in the darkroom is a normal thing I mean that’s where there are compromising photos of his other favorites. I am going to bet that Boston has slept with Ray in there though. Boston and Ray are at least so close that Boston has been telling Ray about how much fun Nick is in bed. Other reason I think Boston likes Ray is how Boston looked like he wanted to talk to him through the intro scenes after the fight. He didn’t. But Boston doesn’t deny what he did was evil. Boston has a strong commitment to the truth and he believes what he did to Ray was wrong.
Then tell me Boston doesn’t look genuinely upset about Ray confronting him about him and Top. Because? Ton still likes Ray and he was hopeful they could eventually repair things but now… that’s going to slip away. Boston looks like he’s having an out of body experience for the rest of the episode. Out of it completely. Because he’s so upset about the mess he’s in. Side side note I think he knows that the proof comes from Nick. He’s picked up on Nick knowing Boston likes Top. He’s well aware of that shift. Which is why Ton has been working so hard on their relationship. He needs Nick to replace Ray in his life. Boston can’t face that he can’t have Ray. He would rather hurt nick until he leaves because that would be easier than losing ray. So this confrontation buries Boston 6 feet under because his relationship to Ray is the most important thing and he believes it’s over.
