Peacock flounder (Bothus mancus)

The peacock flounder is a species of fish in the family Bothidae (lefteye flounders). The species is found widely in relatively shallow waters in the Indo-Pacific, also ranging into warmer parts of the east Pacific. The peacock flounder is also called flowery flounder because it is covered in superficially flower-like bluish spots. As most flounders, the peacock flounder is mainly nocturnal, but is sometimes also active during the day. It hunts for small fishes, crabs and shrimp.

"While it may look rather benign, this pancake-like fish is a voracious predator that feeds mainly on smaller fishes, crustaceans and octopuses. It perfectly blends with its surroundings and waits for an unsuspecting prey item to cruise past. The males are dimorphic with long pectoral fin rays that can extend back to the tail. This is a member of the left-eyed flounder family – when these fish are in their larval stage, both eyes are on the end of the head, like a normal fish. But as the young fish develops, the eyes migrate onto the left side of the head so they can adopt a bottom-dwelling lifestyle. The side of the body that lays on the bottom remains unpigmented. The peacock flounders are found on sand bottoms adjacent to coral reefs." x
