In the same way as the astronomer watches for the North Star, the "bothyer" watches for a chimney. The grey stone stack stretching up over the rise of the glen is the guiding sight that the long walking day is coming to an end.

There are 83 such bothies dotted across Scotland; each one is not the dwelling of any single person, but instead a remote refuge for any hardy traveller who needs a place to shelter.
I have used a few when I’ve gone hiking with friends. As a shelter from the cold they are such a welcome sight to rest one’s weary limbs.
