Botticelli’s birth of Venus?
The Sam standee is in The Birth of Venus (1485–1486) by Sandro Botticelli!
"Pagan" Dress, Elsa Schiaparelli, 1938, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Detail from "La Primavera," 1470s-1480s, Sandro Boticelli, Uffizi Gallery
If Hannibal were to sketch a piece of Will and Chiyoh, the most appropriate Botticelli piece would probably be Pallas and the Centaur.
The original piece is thought to be a companion piece to Primavera and would appropriately depict the current two most prominent people in Hannibal’s life (previously was Bedelia and Will in Florence).
The woman in the drawing is Pallas Athene, better yet known as Athena, the Greek god of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft. Minerva would have been her Roman counterpart. However, she is also believed to be Camilla, a princess raised in the forest by her father, the exiled King Metabus, to be dedicated to Diana, the Roman Goddess of nature, hunters, wildlife, childbirth, crossroads, the night, and the Moon, as a virgin warrior huntress. This is pretty much Chiyoh if we look at the painting through Hannibal’s eyes.
The centaur is not any centaur in particular, however centaurs in general represented uncontrolled passion, lust and sensuality. Unsurprisingly this would be Will from Hannibal’s perspective, especially after what he saw on the cliff with Dolarhyde. An added bonus would be subtly showing how much more attracted he’s become to Will if that was even possible.
This particular Botticelli piece is interpreted as Pallas, the figure of reason to be restraining the centaur, a figure of one’s nature without fear or hesitation even as he wields a weapon, the bow, in his hand. The submission of one’s passion to chastity and/or reason.
Knowing Will and Chiyoh’s respective personalities and their overall dynamic and how they operate, this would be an appropriate art piece to show Hannibal’s thought process in how he views their growing relationship.
The Bride of Frankenstein🍎
I wasn't sure how i wanted to call this, but i'm sure what the story behind it is:
It's an afternoon in Hannibal's study. He had Will dress up, fresh basket of fruits ready. Will provided the meat because he insisted, as he insisted on him being painted an oil portrait in Caravaggio's style- or he wouldn't pose at all- just to see Hannibal out of his comfort zone, artistically, much to Hannibal's delight..
(So yeah i've been sucked into Hannibal lately, on my 2nd rewatch rn, anddd boy what a series)
