didn't do a whole lot of exploration for cadebra and blaine aside from the drawing you've seen before but thought i'd share this.
only direction in the outline was "cadebra is way taller than pep now" and "blaine has a brand new kpop hairstyle". and i was like, okay but blaine already HAD the quintessential kpop curtains. tried whatever this is. literally nothing. And their legs are too long. tried the waistcoat on cadebra but i think the balance kinda sucks.
For Ep 7- The Wolves Who Wandered during the salon sequence, I wanted to include a Fionnaworld Spader somewhere, even though her existence would be implausible for a number of reasons. I originally had Ashley working the front desk too but the camera got reworked in such a way that other incidentals didn't need to be animated in the end.
The Kate Spade idea's messed up but so is AT honestly.
what are your thoughts on the one and only finn the human and his mental state, as someone on crew? did you find it difficult or easier to tap into whatever he has going on up there?
sorry if this goes into spoiler territory haha, im genuinely interested. trying to figure out how to do characters “right”, esp ones as influential and important as finn seems like a very interesting and albeit probably challenging thing to do. u guys did great w fern, itd be cool if u could give us some insight on development w em too :)
I didn't really touch on Finn this season (I mean, he's more the vehicle for the story rather than the story itself – it's Fionna's and Cake's show after all) but people saying the writers must hate Finn because bad things happen to him is a weird read and missing the forest for the trees.
My favorite characters tend to be the main characters – Finn and Jake, Fionna and Cake, Steven, Naruto (lol), Frieren, and so on. I have a lot of affection for Finn and his psychology. I have some complicated feelings about the way people project onto him, or confuse "My boy is on screen! Here is something that is comfy and recognizable and unchallenging!" with Good Writing. "The story isn't moving!" sounds a lot like "The story isn't about Finn/Ooo and I want it to be." The story is moving at a breakneck speed. If you don't find that story or focus as it is interesting, that's perfectly within your right. No one's holding you hostage.
Again, I personally didn't have to delve into Finn's psyche this season, but what I found most interesting and personally resonant was the difference between the ways Fionna and Finn thrive and fail in their respective contexts.
To be clear, I've never heard the word "adhd" used in reference to either character, but whether or not these cartoon characters are confirmed to have a real-world condition, their behaviors are consistent with it. The impulsivity and spontaneity, differences in attention, decisiveness in high-stakes situations, and need for adventure/excitement allowed Finn to be the great hero of Ooo. He's got stimulation. He's got an uncomplicated, meaningful purpose helping people. Following his "hero heart" got him pretty far in Ooo. We see he has unaddressed maladaptive patterns in his adulthood, but he's built up so much goodwill over his life that these patterns are probably forgiven or shrugged off.
These same qualities are active hindrances and considered "disordered" in Fionnaworld with all its bureaucracy and oppressive structure. Even before you bring simple misogyny into the conversation, Fionna is exactly the kind of fuckup Finn would be in our world. She's extremely well-meaning and ready to throw down for her friends, but she struggles to see the bigger picture when she's fixated on a goal. She's got poor emotional regulation and all the signs of majorly disordered/different executive function. She lives in a society where she will be swiftly punished for it socially, financially and psychologically. And as we found out in S1, she's just a normal, if extremely brave, human woman.
I think S2 really brought that contextual difference into stark relief. While everyone in Ooo has dropped everything, doing everything they can to save Finn – beloved hero and friend – Fionna is set up to fail and fumble her bonds with everyone in the big city.
Anyway, this is all to say, I can't wait for everyone to see Episode 10.
I wish I saw more praise of Madeleine Martin's voice performance of Fionna. She so fully and naturally embodies the character and is so clearly invested in the role that when I look up pictures of Madeleine Martin, I honestly can't believe it's not a blonde woman with bunny teeth and two dots for eyes.
Do you know who wrote the song in ep 7? Unless I missed it, the credits don't even list it, which I find very odd.
P.S. I loved this season a lot so far, more than last actually (as much as I love Simon, his presence definitely limited Fionna and Cake's development), can't wait to see how it's wrapped up!
Pat McHale and The Blasting Company.
And you get it! There's a lot to love about S1, Simon was a very charismatic lead, and Fionna and Cake got their character beats, but it really did feel like the Simon show ultimately. S2 feels like the actual first season of Fionna and Cake and I was relieved going in that it wasn't an easy retread with multiverse-hopping while FnC play second fiddle to another familar Ooo character. The cherry on top is that the tritagonist is Huntress Wizard and I'd been looking forward to working on something HW-related for years
