work hard, play hard
I worked hard today. I hit the gym early in the morning because I was working at A&F in the afternoon. Seeing that I've been consistently going to the gym since returning to school, I decided to begin taking up the creatine powder supplement again. My plan is just to finish the bottle and then just use protein drinks as a post-workout drink.
From 8am on, I just worked on updating my dragonboat tumblr. Before, it was a secondary account. What I did was start a new tumblr and then transfer all the blogs over, one by one. I had hoped that some of my friends would respond and go to the gym with me but all of them were busy.
At 11:30am, I went to the gym on my own. The focus of the day was on legs. The workout was simple, quick, and heavy.
9/24/11 @ 11:30am [Legs]
Warm-up - Jump rope - 2mins, 2mins
Warm-up - Jump squats - 10, 10
Squats (135) - 8x135, 9x155, 8x175, 8x185
Box hops (3') - 10, 10, 10
Alternating lunges (35) - 10x35, 10x35, 10x35
Calf raises (60) - 40x60, 40x60, 40x60
Jump roping was a little difficult. The ropes were either too short or too long and so it was quite difficult to jump nonstop.
Between the parentheses are the weight/height that I did that exercise before. The point is to record/remember weight that would be pushing my limitations, but not far exceeding it. It is marked as the weight/height that I would begin my workout with. Eventually, I try to push beyond it.
My squat weight actually surprised me. I completed the 135 pretty easily. Added 20, and it was still pretty easy. By the time I pushed 175, my legs burned but they were not destroyed yet. I decided to try to push it a little bit and managed to complete 8 good form 185lbs squats. It scared me that I might develop irregular looking muscles in the legs.
As for alternating lunges, the weights were more of a strain on my arms than my legs. Just holding the weight was quite difficult as my grip began to loosen and the 35 felt like a 70lbs.
The calf raises turned out to be a killer too, but I'm glad that I completed the three sets.
The entire workout took about 40 minutes and my legs were tired. I just wish that I didn't forget to also workout abs. I wanted to do the hanging leg to side exercise. When I got back to the dorm, I just cleaned up some and prepared to go to work at A&F. I worked at A&F from 2:30pm - 9:00pm. After an hour meeting about dragonboating, I went out to Tresidder only to discover that there was a campus party going on. Knowing me, of course I had to go! I'm glad I went. Anyway, tomorrow's the first big gathering event for SDB. I know that it will be a great success and get people interested in joining the team. =)
All I Think About is...
SDB! Stanford Dragonboat!
It has been the activity that is on all of my conversations. Since coming back on campus and attending the AANSOC welcome on Tuesday, I've had huge confidence that this year is going to be the year that sets up Stanford's Dragonboat foundation for many years to come. Talking to all the freshman as well as fraternity brothers about it is getting me pumped up and excited.
Another great thing about SDB this year is the leadership. Having four captains really help with planning and delegating work. At the same time, having more voices provides a homelier and more comfy environment for me. I hope it's the same for all of the leadership circle. At 2pm today, H, P, M, and I met up at the Alumni Center to discuss our visions, plans, and activities for the upcoming season. One of the biggest things that we needed to think through was the logistics. If we get a lot of people (which I think we will) how are we going to get enough rides/carpools out to BIAC? Also, rosters and all that stuff. P actually had a great suggestion which was that I should keep my hands off most of the internal stuff, rather just oversee and delegate. This is valid because I need to transfer the leadership off. Anyway, having the meeting this afternoon only made SDB feel that much stronger than years past to me.
At three PM, I went to hit the gym. Today's focus were legs. The jump-ropes at the gym's too short. I keep needing to scrunch my back in order to do the jumps quick enough. Also, funny story, I walked into the gym in my jeans to look for H. The guy working at the counter chased me all the way down to the end to tell me that it's gym rules that no one wears jeans to workout. I then said, "Okay, I'll take it off right now."
The squats were really difficult for me. I tried to match H's 155lbs, but could only do one rep. Anyway, my hope is that in a month, I would be able to squat my own weight. As for lunges, they were NBD. Holding the 35lbs actually tired out my arms more than it tired out my legs. Maybe next time, I'll use the barbells.
9/21/11 @ 3:00pm
Warm-up Jump-rope - 2mins, 2mins Max push-ups - 40
Squats - 8x95, 8x135, 8x135 Box hop-ups (3') - 10, 10, 10 Lunges (alternating) - 10x35, 10x35, 10x35
I went to Wilbur for dinner and spoke to a few more people about dragonboating. Then it was study time at Meyer. I just ended up making up new designs for the SDB website, in hopes that it would provide more clear instructions and attract interested members. At night, I went to the Okada Chillout to 1) see what the incoming Asian community will look like and 2) talk to people about dragonboating. To me, it was quite surprisingly to see many non-asians at the hangout. I thought that it showed a huge step toward accepting and experiencing other cultures. The event started at 10:30 and I stayed out there until 1:30 just talking to people. So many names and so many new friends. It's great.
