Boyprox or Boy-proximal
Boy-proximal (proximal means “near to”; i use biyprox for short!) is a term made to include
men (cis and trans, just to affirm that) and
trans folks who are not necessarily men (or are not 100% men as some demiboys may ID, or are not always men as some genderfluid folks may ID, etc etc) but who experience a connection to boyhood, but not boyness.
Men (group 1) experience boyness because they are boys. They will usually also experience boyhood. Boyprox non-men (group 2) experience boyhood, but not boyness, because they are not men.
Boyhood is a Very Large Concept and one that is difficult to pin down, because it has so many applications. here are some examples (not by any means all of them):
a connection to masculinity.
a connection to men, despite actual gender identity.
a sense of belonging in men’s spaces.
a masculine gender presentation.
being assigned male at birth and holding that significant to one’s identity
holding male-assigned experiences significant to you and your life (ex: boy scouts, attending an all-boy school)
and, of course, identifying partially or sometimes or always as a man - this is not required for boyhood, but often accompanies it.
