I've made no secret of my love for Sandra Boynton's board books. They're clever, hilarious, warm, and each seems to have its own unique magic that somehow persists through dozens upon dozens of readings. But I'm missing my nieces and nephew today, and there's one particularly special Boynton book that always makes me think of them. I recently saw "Snuggle Puppy: a Little Love Song" (2003) described as "a great big hug in book form" and I can't think of a more accurate description. While other Boynton books are wonderfully giggle inducing (and to be fair, so is this one when sung in a burlesque growl with eyebrows all a-waggle, as one does on particularly silly days), "Snuggle Puppy" has always been the book that I've read (or at this point, recited by heart) to my babies while curled up together, when I wanted to remind them how deeply loved they were. This is the book that I have video of my now-teenaged eldest niece, as a toddler, reciting to her 92-year-old great-grandmother with beaming adoration: "The way I feel about you is a kind of a song." ♥ So please, grab a copy of this book and sing this little love song with your kids.
