'Seat of the Soul'
My ancient Egyptian-inspired piece, now hanging at Filter Cafe! (:
According to legend, The Great Royal Wife, Nefertiti and Pharaoh Akhenaten were religious revolutions. Unlike the royal couples before them, they were known to worship one god only, Aten, the god of the sun. Some believe that after Akhenaten's death, Nefertiti took over the throne. There is speculation as to if his entrance into the afterlife was planned.
The jackal-headed god Anubis is associated with mummification and the afterlife. When ancient Egyptians of higher social status passed on, their vital organs were removed and placed into specific canopic jars, each jar representing a different god. The brain was taken out through the nose and thrown away (the people believed it was only stuffing for the head). And the heart, however, was left untouched, for it was the most cherished part of the body, "the seat of the soul".
