I don't like how modern fonts render Bopo. They are all ugly featureless quads with awful spacing and no kerning (and with horizontal “ㄧ” even in horizontal writing). This is also how the manual from 2017 says to do it. For comparison, many Japanese fonts have proportional Kana, but Bopo is virtually always square.

This isn't how it was printed in the past, and definitely not how it was handwritten. I just came across this random book from 1932 and I absolutely love the lettering used for the title on its cover. There's nothing particularly special about it, but there aren't many chances of seeing something like that on the Internet for someone who doesn't speak Chinese.

The Bopomofo letter ㄧ may be written as a vertical line in horizontal writing. This is very unlike Japanese ー (長音符) which is always written parallel to the writing direction. I've been mistaken about that for years. Whoa. But it's all right, the manual from Taiwan's Ministry of Education says it can be always written horizontally.
